UFC on FOX 2 Results: Is Chael Sonnen Still a Threat to Anderson Silva?
Chael Sonnen has now officially earned a rematch with Anderson Silva.
Although it wasn't pretty, Sonnen did enough to secure the victory over Michael Bisping at UFC on FOX 2, and he will now meet the Brazilian later this year in a highly anticipated rematch for the UFC middleweight title.
While the first two rounds were highly competitive, the third round saw Sonnen impose his will and dominate Bisping, utilizing his wrestling, and controlling him on the ground until the final bell.
Sonnen's performance throughout the first two rounds left some fans questioning his ability as he was unable to get a takedown on his opponent and amount much offense. Bisping was able to neutralize Sonnen's wrestling by keeping distance and out-striking him.
Despite having limited success against Bisping, Sonnen was still able to wear down his opponent with aggression and pace, allowing him to get control of his back and get top position in the later rounds.
Now, Sonnen will look ahead to a rematch with Silva after nearly defeating "The Spider" in the first bout at UFC 117 last year.
Considering his performance against Bisping, Sonnen still possesses a strong wrestling pedigree to give the champion the same problems as he did in their first encounter. Sonnen is relentless while on the attack and he will pursue the takedown at any moment to gain any sort of advantage during the bout.
Also, his constant pressure and wrestling skills could help him complete the takedown more often on Silva and neutralize the champion's superior striking ability, especially if the bout enters the championship rounds.
Regardless of the outcome, Sonnen will have a second chance to challenge Silva in one of the biggest title bouts in UFC history.
