Australian Open 2012 Results: Day 14 Scores and Results Summary

Nicholas GossJun 7, 2018

Novak Djokovic beat Rafael Nadal in five sets to win the 2012 Australian Open during one of the most memorable matches the sport of tennis has ever seen.

Djokovic showed unbelievable strength and endurance in this match, which was played just over 24 hours after his exhausting semifinal win over Andy Murray.

The Serbian star won the match 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 7-5 and completed a remarkable run in Melbourne, which included wins over top players such as David Ferrer, Lleyton Hewitt, Andy Murray and Nadal.

The match against Nadal lasted five hours and 53 minutes, becoming the longest Grand Slam singles final in tennis history. The previous record for longest Grand Slam final was set at the 1988 US Open final.

After losing to Djokovic in four sets during the previous two Grand Slam finals the two have met in, Nadal showed that he is more capable than ever to dethrone the Serbian star and take back the world's No. 1 ranking.

Nadal took the first set, which was really important for him, but he lost the next two, which put himself in a difficult position. In the fifth set, Nadal broke Djokovic to take a 4-2 advantage, but he allowed Djokovic to climb back to 4-4 after the next two games.

During that fifth set, Djokovic showed a lot of resiliency and character. It will give him tremendous confidence moving forward as the season gets going in the spring and summer.

With his dominance this month in Melbourne, Djokovic has a real chance to win all four Grand Slam tournaments this season. If he wins the French Open at Roland Garros in the spring, he will have won four straight Grand Slam events—a remarkable accomplishment.

Sunday's Australian Open final will go down as one of the best matches in history and one that tennis fans won't forget for a long time.
