Australian Open 2012 Finals: Azarenka Will Not Win Another Grand Slam in 2012

Nicholas GossJun 7, 2018

Victoria Azarenka dominated Maria Sharapova in the 2012 Australian Open final, but don't expect the 23-year-old star from Belarus to win another Grand Slam in 2012.

Azarenka is a very good player, but she did not have a difficult road to the women's final in Melbourne. Sharapova was the only player seeded in the top five that Azarenka needed to defeat en route to the Championship in Melbourne.

Azarenka played well in the final against the Russian star, but Sharapova really played an awful match. She beat herself with unforced errors and her service game was not up to her normal standards.

Women's tennis in general has a lot of great players and unlike the men's side, there are no dominant players guaranteed to make a deep run at every single Grand Slam tournament.

Stars such as Caroline Wozniacki, Petra Kvitova, Kim Clijsters, Azarenka and Sharapova are all capable of winning any tournament they enter and this parity in women's tennis will likely prevent any one player from dominating this season. The last four Grand Slams have been won by first-time champions.

Now that Azarenka has climbed the mountain of women's tennis as a Grand Slam champion, the pressure on her to succeed will be far greater than anything she's previously faced in her career.

She had never even been to a final before this month's Australian Open, so dealing with all the success is a new challenge she will be unfamiliar with.

Some people don't respond well to pressure and expectations after they succeed on the big stage. After winning the US Open back in August, Australian Sam Stosur lost in the early rounds in Melbourne and crumbled under the expectations and performing in front of her home crowd.

The added pressure of expectations, plus the fact that women's tennis is so competitive, will hurt Azarenka's chances of winning another Grand Slam singles title this season.
