Lakers Rumors: Los Angeles Is Right to Aim for Gilbert Arenas
With the recent string of injuries and an abundance of old legs, the Los Angeles Lakers are 100 percent justified in their pursuit of Gilbert Arenas.
Let the gun jokes flow forth.
All the jokes aside, this deal is a dream for all parties involved. After being cut by the Magic earlier this season, the healthy Arenas is looking to get his career back on track and squeeze out a few more seasons in the NBA.
Derek Fisher is living on borrowed time and Steve Blake is still on the mend, which means the Lakers have been forced to turn the offense over to rookie Darius Morris more than they’d like to. Agent Zero would be a nice fit there.
HoopsWorld NBA Insider Alex Kennedy is reporting about the mutual interest:
"The Los Angeles Lakers have expressed interest in Gilbert Arenas, according to sources close to the situation. The 30-year-old is an unrestricted free agent after being amnestied by the Orlando Magic last month. No signing is imminent, but the Lakers have reached out to the veteran point guard.
"
Smart move.
In a shortened season that features far more games than a NBA team normally faces, the aging legs of Fisher will start to give out if there isn’t significant time to rest. Arenas would fill the role of bench player who could manage an offense and hit some shots when called upon.
While Arenas has never been known as a great defender, the Lakers could use Agent Zero during times when they need an offensive injection at the point or when it comes time for the Lakers to hang on to a lead.
However Los Angeles utilizes their personnel is up to them, but signing Arenas should be no question in the minds of the people making the decisions. The team needs a veteran point guard who can score and do the little things.
Despite his lack of recent success, the combination of coming back to his hometown and having a guide like Kobe Bryant to keep Arenas in line will be enough for the Lakers to sign the shooter.
