National Signing Day 2012: Overrated Programs Destined to Fail

Michael DixonJun 7, 2018

With National Signing Day fast approaching, these schools are going to prove the class rankings wrong.

In this case, that is not a good thing for players and fans of these programs.

The rankings may say one thing, but when these teams step onto the field, we're going to see a different story. These teams are not going to be any better than what we've grown used to seeing.

All class and player rankings are according to Rivals.com.

Tennessee

Rank their recruiting class however you want. Rivals currently has the Volunteers' recruiting class at No. 11 in the country. But the fact of the matter is that this team has not made a BCS Bowl since the 1999 season. Still, in the bowl games they have made in that time they are only 3-6.

That run of success is not going to be changing any time soon. Not with this recruiting class, anyway. Their class does not currently feature one 5-star recruit.

Even at No. 11 in the country, they're ranked below conference rivals Alabama, Florida and Texas A&M. This recruiting class is going to fall flat. The Volunteers don't have the makeup to compete for SEC Championship anymore and this group of players isn't going to change that.

UCLA

Tennessee may not be relevant anymore, but they were relevant far more recently than UCLA ever was. This class isn't going to make them relevant in their city, division, conference, or in the country.

Rivals gives the Bruins have one 5-star recruit. That is a good start, but Ellis McCarthy is being complimented by only five 4-star recruits. When you play in Los Angeles and have access to that recruiting territory, you need to do better than that. This is especially true when crosstown rival USC has their recruiting restricted.

The fact that UCLA hasn't managed to do any better is a terrible sign for its on-field future, even with Jim Mora Jr. coming to town. The Trojans' postseason ban is now lifted, making them the big dog in the Pac-12 South again.

UCLA had to do a lot better than this. Their talent is not deep enough to compete and none of those 4- and 5-star recruits are quarterbacks. That is a troubling sign.

Texas A&M

The Aggies' current ranking of No. 10 is not going end up coming true when this class' time in College Station comes to an end. According to Rivals, they have six 4-star recruits, and one 5-star stud. But moving to the SEC West, the Aggies had to do better than that.

This program managed nothing more than a 6-6 regular season in the Big 12, good enough for a seventh place finish. Outside of Oklahoma State, the Big 12 wasn't even that good this year.

Now, they are stepping into the SEC West, with Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas and LSU. Trey Williams may be a dynamic player, but time at Texas A&M is not going to bring a lot of success.
