Arsenal Breaking News: Jack Wilshere Suffers Injury Setback, Could Miss Season

English newspaper The Guardian is reporting that Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has suffered a "massive injury scare" in his rehabilitation from offseason ankle surgery that could jeopardize his season and potentially force him to to miss this summer's European Championships with England.

According to Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, Wilshere re-aggravated the injury while running on Wednesday. Wilshere had first injured his right ankle at age 16 before suffering a stress fracture to the ligament last summer. The ankle has been a constant source of niggling problems for the young star.

"We don't know how bad it is," Wenger told reporters on Friday. "At the moment we are investigating. Jack is seeing a specialist today. Once Jack had pain in his right ankle, we stopped him right away."

Just one week ago, Wilshere had "stunned" the Arsenal medical staff with the speed of his recovery, which was being called a "medical miracle."

It had seemed Wilshere would not only be able to feature in Arsenal's upcoming Champions League matchup with AC Milan on Feb. 15, but could possibly have made his comeback as soon as next weekend, when Arsenal host Blackburn Rovers at the Emirates on Feb. 4.

The 20-year-old had yet to begin full training, but doctors were encouraged that the injury site at his ankle appeared to be "clear," an indication he might avoid further muscular problems.

Those optimistic reports have subsequently been put on hold, and Arsenal fans' hearts have been sent into mouths, as Wilshere awaits the news that could well determine the rest of his season.
