National Signing Day: 5 Big Names Whose Decisions Will Shock You

Ross DautelJun 7, 2018

National Signing Day is fast approaching and blue chip high school athletes all across the country are finalizing their college plans for next year. Signing Day is always a frenzy with coaches scrambling to put the finishing touches on their recruiting class.

Although many schools have a firm idea of which players they will sign on on Feb. 1st, there are always a few athletes whose decisions shock even the greatest recruiting experts.

Let's take a look at which players are the most likely to surprise this year...

Bryce Treggs

1 of 5

Treggs has been a solid verbal to the University of California for some time. The leader of the "Calgang," Treggs has been known as one of the Golden Bears' most vocal recruiters. With the departure of defensive line coach and recruiting guru Tosh Lupoi to Washington, Treggs has reopened his commitment to a certain extent.

The 4-star recruit recently visited UCLA and is planning to officially visit USC today. Bryce's father, Brian, attended Cal and it was almost a surefire bet that the younger Treggs would follow in his father's footsteps by playing in Berkeley.

Treggs appears to be intrigued by what UCLA and new head coach Jim Mora Jr. have to offer. Although Treggs reaffirmed his loyalty to the Golden Bears over Twitter, his official visits to UCLA and USC certainly imply he is still looking around.

Other Cal recruits, including 5-star safety Shaq Thompson, have been looking elsewhere. Don't be surprised if Treggs decide to jump ship as well come signing day.

Tracy Howard

2 of 5

Howard, the top cornerback prospect in the nation, is believed to have been a longtime lean to Florida. The defensive back from Miramar, FL has narrowed his college options the Gators as well as Florida State and Miami.

Howard has also officially visited USC and West Virginia but has expressed a desire to stay in the Sunshine State. There was much speculation as to who would land Howard's final official visit, but eventually the Canes beat out LSU for that right. Even though Howard has reportedly favored Florida for some time, the power of having the final official visit could play into Miami's favor.

The Hurricanes have a long history of placing talented defensive backs into the NFL, a thought that should intrigue Howard. This one should come right down to the wire, but don't be surprised if Howard turns some heads and picks up a Miami hat come signing day when he announces his decision on national TV.

Arik Armstead

3 of 5

Armstead has perhaps been the most enigmatic figure of the 2012 recruiting class. After originally committing to USC during his junior year, Armstead decommitted, citing the Trojans supposed mishandling of his brother's medical condition as a primary factor in his decision.

Armstead then reopened his recruitment and eventually narrowed his choices to California, Oregon, Auburn, and Notre Dame. Cal was rumored to be the new favorite of the highly ranked lineman, but that seemed to change after Tosh Lupoi bolted for Seattle.

The Trojans appeared to be out of the running for quite some time, but recently Lane Kiffin scheduled an in-home visit with the Armstead's for tonight. Arik's older brother, Armond, has re-enrolled in graduate classes at USC for the spring semester after previously expressing a desire to transfer.

Arik fell in love with the Trojans over a year ago and if he re-committed to USC, it would surely be one of the bigger turn-arounds we've seen in recruiting for some time. Defensive line is a position of need for USC so don't be surprised if the Trojans nab Armstead's signature on signing day.

Eddie Goldman

4 of 5

Eddie Goldman is the seventh ranked player in the country, and he also ranks among the toughest recruits to read. The 6'4", 307 lbs defensive tackle has kept his recruitment tight to the vest. He has narrowed his selection to six schools: Alabama, Auburn, California, Florida State, Clemson and Miami (FL), but he has yet to designate any of them as his favorite.

By not identifying a leader, each of Goldman's finalists feel as if they have a shot to land him, which makes his announcement one of the most anticipated in the country. While Goldman's decision will come right down to the wire, in the end look for the Seminoles to add to their already star-studded recruiting class.

If he commits to Florida State, Goldman would join fellow five star defensive linemen Mario Edwards Jr. and Dante Fowler Jr as well as four star Justin Shanks. In the end, Goldman's relationship with these players as well as his comfort level with head coach Jimbo Fisher will lead him to Tallahassee, much to the shock and dismay of fans in Tuscaloosa, Auburn and Coral Gables.

Nelson Agholor

5 of 5

Nelson Agholor is known as one of the most dynamic recruits that 2012 has to offer. The 6'2", 180 lbs wide receiver has the tools to play multiple positions across the field and would be an instant impact type player for whichever school he decides to attend.

Agholor's final five consists of Florida, Florida State, Oklahoma, Notre Dame and Southern California. A native of Tampa, FL, many speculate a battle between the hometown Noles and Gators for Agholor's services. But one team, USC, could rain on the Sunshine State parade.

Agholor's first offer was from USC and the Trojans have been in the picture ever since. The Berkeley Prep star will take a trip to Troy this weekend and Lane Kiffin would love nothing more than to reel in this elite talent. It's never easy for a school outside the South to reel in prospects from that area, but USC coaches Monte Kiffin and Ed Orgeron have developed inroads across Dixie.

Although Florida has been considered the longtime favorite a solid trip to Southern California this weekend could be enough to sway Agholor to the Trojans. We'll find out the news on signing day when Agholor makes his decision public on ESPNU.
