Mayweather vs. Pacquiao: Money Is Right to Offer Pac-Man a Flat Payout

Brian MaziqueJun 4, 2018

The $40 million dollar guarantee Floyd Mayweather offered Manny Pacquiao is generous, considering the financial investment required by both men to make the superfight a reality.

Manny's financial investment equals....zero dollars. Manny wears only one hat in this scenario, the hat of a fighter. His role is simplified and the most high profile, but his promoter Bob Arum fronts the dough to make the fight. Yet Arum has seemingly advised Pacquiao to demand a 50-50 split of all revenue.

In Mayweather's case, he is the promoter and the fighter, because he owns Mayweather Promotions. He has to invest his own money in the promotion of the fight. In a sense, to expect Mayweather to split the pay-per-view and all revenue is like telling Tiger Woods he has to split the advertising dollars and the purse with the eventual winner of a tournament he sponsors.

That simply isn't fair or good business. To the untrained and uninformed eye, that offer may seem arrogant; especially since it plays into the perception many have of Mayweather, but it is more than fair.

Bob Arum is in control of Pacquiao's communication and actions. He is demanding the 50-50 split with full knowledge that it will sound fair to fans. These types of tactics are nothing new for Arum. What many don't realize is that Arum is as arrogant and manipulative as many perceive Mayweather to be. He has long feuded with Don King, another boxing promoter, who called Arum a "rat fink" for attempting to bribe IBF officials to secure a high ranking for a fighter Arum promoted.

In addition, Arum also has personal issue with Mayweather. He promoted Mayweather through the early and mid 2000s. Their professional relationship was severed, after which Mayweather said that Arum underpaid and exploited him.

Arum's hardball and media manipulative tactics are a part of his makeup and personal issue with Mayweather; Pacquiao is essentially an expensive and valuable pawn.

Unless Pacquiao takes more control of his boxing affairs, he should not get paid the same as a fighter who is making a larger financial investment. Mayweather has had plenty of unreasonable moments in his career, but this is not one of them.
