WWE: Zack Ryder Injury Is Foolish in Attempt at Pushing John Cena over the Edge

Adam WellsJan 25, 2012

Zack Ryder and John Cena have formed a unique bond, to say the least, over the last few months. WWE has been using Ryder to try and make Cena more sympathetic and likable to the audience, but what happened on Raw this Monday was so cheap and tacky that it is obvious the plan will backfire.

When Kane choke-slammed Ryder through the stage and WWE announced that he had a broken back, Cena decided that now was the time to get angry. He looked right into the camera after shoving Josh Mathews with the most hilarious evil face of all time.

The basic idea behind this angle is that Kane has finally pushed Cena over the edge. He is going to a dark place that he will never come back from.

It is a good idea in theory, the problem is the execution of everything up to and including Monday night has been so terrible that no one is buying into anything.

Think back to when Kane returned. His reason for being was because he heard the fans were booing Cena, so he wanted him to get angry about that. WWE has a lot of terrible ideas for stories, but this one might rank with some of the worst in history.

Why does it matter to Kane what the fans are doing to Cena?

Adding Ryder into the mix has done nothing but make him look like a dork; and now saying that he has a broken back just adds more comedy into this angle that we are supposed to be taking seriously.

Cena is not an edgy, aggressive character. He has been all sunshine and smiles for the last six years that the idea of turning him into The Rock, which is what they are trying to do, just to get a 50-50 crowd reaction at WrestleMania is a completely illogical way of booking for many reasons.

First and foremost, WrestleMania is Rock's first singles match in eight years, and it takes place in his hometown. Why would the crowd boo him?

WWE needs to give up on the idea that Cena will ever be cheered by the older male audience, because, as we have seen time and again with this angle, all that happens is he gets buried deeper each week.

Ryder's injury is not going to have the intended effect on Cena's character that WWE wants, and he is going to look worse off than he did before because it has been so bad. Let the fans boo and cheer whoever they want, and be done with it. Please, because fans can't take much more of this angle.
