Super Bowl Spread: AFC and NFC Title Games Highlight Reasons to Avoid XLVI Line

Wes ODonnellJun 3, 2018

The Super Bowl XLVI matchup between the New York Giants and New England Patriots could very easily be the San Francisco 49ers vs. Baltimore Ravens, the New York Giants vs. Baltimore Ravens or the New England Patriots vs. San Francisco 49ers.

We as fans—although I do apologize to the Ravens and 49ers fans whose hearts were broken—couldn't have asked for a more exciting Championship Weekend.

Two great games between four elite teams with a multitude of storylines circulating should any of the teams advance made for fantastic drama and excitement.

With both the Giants and Patriots winning by only three points, there really wasn't much of a surprise when the Super Bowl XLVI line opened at Patriots -3.5.

The Giants have actually defeated the Patriots in each of their their last two meetings. They were the last team to beat them this season (24-20) and, of course, the legendary Super Bowl XLII upset.

Why the Patriots are still favored isn't much of a mystery, but it is irrelevant.

Neither the Patriots nor Giants would have covered the spread last weekend with the current Super Bowl line.

The closeness of last week's games has highlighted one thing and that is that anything can happen.

With Tom Brady and Eli Manning involved, no lead is safe. With Brady and Manning involved, there is no amount of time to short to get back down the field.

With the Patriots and Giants involved, expect the unexpected.

If and when you want to bet the Super Bowl, unless you're making prop bets, avoid the unexpected.

This game simply reeks of the unexpected.
