49ers' Kyle Williams Reportedly Devastated over Costly Fumble vs. Giants

The hardest part of football is the lack of chances to make up for your mistakes.

Without the benefit of a 162-game regular season or a best-of-seven playoff format, you either come through or choke.

San Francisco 49ers punt returner Kyle Williams had the opportunity to redeem himself after a costly fourth-quarter fumble directly led to a New York Giants touchdown. Instead, he fumbled again and set up the Giants to kick the game-winner.

Obviously he isn’t the sole player to blame but is the easy scapegoat with the way everything played out. Predictably, the hatred from fans is coming in at a fast and furious rate. TMZ is reporting that all of the negative attention has hit Williams hard:

Williams' two monumental turnovers contributed heavily to yesterday's loss to the Giants -- and his stepmother, Jessica, tells TMZ no one feels worse about the game than the family ... saying they are "devastated."

It’s a tough pill to swallow and for his own safety, I think it’s a good idea for Williams to lay low for a while. Fans need time to cool off and realize it’s only a game. They need to comprehend that Williams is only 23 and made incredible progress as a receiver in his second season (20 receptions for 241 yards and three TDs). He is a key part of the future.

Unfortunately there are crazies out there that want to make Williams suffer even more. They don’t understand that the devastation he’s currently feeling is more than enough.

It’s one of the ugly sides of sports that rears its head from time to time. With Twitter now a mainstream vehicle to directly connect with others, I can only imagine the hatred being spewed upon his account.

The son of White Sox GM Kenny Williams will eventually get over this massive disappointment; let’s just hope fans give him a break.

Nobody will be chomping at the bit more to redeem himself next season than Kyle Williams.
