Ohio State Football Recruiting: Urban Meyer Living Up to His Reputation

Ryan RudnanskyJun 7, 2018

Urban Meyer has built up a reputation of landing top recruits throughout his coaching career. That's why he was the ideal fit for troubled Ohio State, coming off NCAA sanctions.

And he's making it known just how pivotal he could be for the Buckeyes.

When Meyer was hired, he was taking over a program that had finished a disappointing 6-6 and had received a one-year bowl ban. Top recruit Kyle Kalis had jumped ship in the midst of the chaos.

But it only took one week for Meyer to right the ship. Meyer landed defensive ends Noah Spence (No. 4 recruit, according to ESPNU) and Se’Von Pittman (No. 98) and defensive tackle Tommy Schutt (No. 108) all within the same week. Running back/linebacker David Perkins (No. 159) and linebacker Camren Williams (No. 167) have also committed to Ohio State with Meyer in charge.

Folks, he's doing it again. Sparking memories of his time at Florida, when the Gators won two championships, Meyer has already made an imprint on the college football landscape and the season hasn't even started yet.

There's no question Ohio State took a blow from the NCAA after several players allegedly received improper benefits and former head coach Jim Tressel was ousted after he failed to disclose it. But how quickly things change. With Meyer at the helm, the Buckeyes have replaced a legendary coach with another legendary coach, and it's all of a sudden looking brighter in Columbus.

Spence in particular looks like he's going to be a force at the next level. At 6'4", 245 pounds, he has top first-step quickness off the line and has the frame to be a threat inside with some added bulk. He's shown in high school that he can be an elite pass-rusher off the edge and while spinning inside. He has the potential to single-handedly create havoc for opposing offenses.

It's remarkable what Meyer has done thus far and you get the feeling he has more tricks up his sleeve, in the offseason and when the season begins.

Ohio State has sustained a setback, but Meyer is ensuring it's nothing but a bump in the road in the long run.
