Australian Open 2012 Semifinals: Wozniacki vs. Azarenka Will Decide Grand Slam
The 2012 Australian Open will go through either Caroline Wozniacki or Victoria Azarenka.
These two women are at the top of their game and are currently set to do battle against inferior opponents in the quarterfinals with a looming matchup in the semifinals.
Wozniacki is matching up against Kim Clijsters, a 28-year-old Belgian who won it all last year in this tournament but was injured against Li Na in the fourth round. Clijsters has been contemplating retirement again for a while and it’s clear she simply isn’t fit enough to beat the 21-year-old Danish phenom she faces this round.
Azarenka will be taking on Agnieszka Radswanka, a 22-year-old Polish player that she has already bested in Sydney this month.
These two women have met before and Azarenka leads the series, 6-3, meaning she should have no problem with these raised stakes.
Should both Wozniacki and Azarenka be victorious, it sets up a dream matchup between the No. 1 and No. 3 seed in the semifinals.
These two players have met six times in the past and the Dane currently has a 4-2 lead in the all-time series.
Wozniacki is undefeated on hard court against her potential opponent and has a 2-0 lifetime lead on that surface.
She will obviously be the favorite, but don’t discount Azarenka, who has been playing flawless tennis and has yet to lose a single set in this tournament.
There is little doubt that these are two of the best players left in the tournament and the winner of their possible match will go on to win the Grand Slam. It’s a shame that they will meet so early.
