College Football Recruiting Daily News Nugget: 10 Biggest Developments to Follow

Edwin WeathersbyJan 23, 2012

I'm taking a stab at a potential new series and avenue of information here with a Daily Nuggets series, where I'm just going to run down 10 of the biggest and latest developments that are impacting the recruiting scene.

Should be a fun read, especially at this time of year when so much is happening on the trail. So come on inside and let me quickly prime you up to what's going down in the final full week before NSD.

Here we go.

10. Avery Young Had a Great Trip to Miami

1 of 10

5-star OT prospect Avery Young is back from his trip to Miami. It appears Coral Gables treated him well, as he had a great time.

Young was pleasantly surprised at how things were with Al Golden's program and now says Miami has moved up his list. Auburn, Alabama, Georgia and Florida are also in the mix.

9. Florida State Back in It Per Josh Harvey-Clemons' Grandfather

2 of 10

A few month back, Josh Harvey-Clemons was thought to be down to a Florida vs. Georgia race. It was puzzling, as Florida State was always felt to have the inside track on the 4-star OLB/WR prospect.

Well, after a recent trip to Tallahassee, Harvey-Clemons' grandfather tells Scout.com that the 'Noles are back in it. Can Jimbo Fisher close this deal late, Bobby Bowden-style?

8. Auburn Suffers a Crushing Blow at the Hands of Florida State

3 of 10

Auburn was celebrating the arrival of new defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder recently, but all that has stopped now. The Tigers learned late last week that WR Ricardo Louis was spurning them for Florida State.

It's a crushing blow for Gene Chizik, but a huge coup for Jimbo Fisher. Louis is thought to have as much upside as any WR prospect in the land.

7. The Sunshine State Big Three to Slug It out for Tracy Howard?

4 of 10

Tracy Howard is one of the premier CB prospects in the nation and is still undecided. However, that may be changing very soon, as Scout.com is hearing he is visiting Miami in a couple days.

Howard's already tripped to UF and FSU, and it's likely he will stay in Florida. Some claim it'll be the Gators, while others yell for the Seminoles.

Don't count out the Canes.

6. Darius Hamilton Visited Rutgers This Past Weekend

5 of 10

5-star DE/DT Darius Hamilton has flirted with Rutgers for the duration of his recruitment, at one point even naming them his leader. This past weekend was Rutgers' chance to sell him up close and personal of staying at home.

5. Arik Armstead Waiting Until Signing Day

6 of 10

At first, Arik Armstead was thought to be deciding in January so he could enroll early and get going soon. Armstead was also thought to be wanting to play basketball this season in college.

However, that decision has been delayed. Now, his brother, Armond, is transferring from USC, and it appears Notre Dame and Auburn are the top schools for Arik, as they give him the best chance to play with his brother.

4. Jameis Winston Will Meet with Nessmeier Before Making a Decision

7 of 10

Alabama lost OC Jim McElwain, as he is now Colorado State's head coach. The Tide have pried Washington assistant Doug Nessmeier to Tuscaloosa, and 5-star QB Jameis Winston is watching.

In fact, he's watching so intently that he will meet with Nessmeier in the very near future to discuss his offensive philosophy. Even though Winston is committed to Florida State, he still wants to hear what the new Tide OC has to say.

3. Eddie Goldman Down to a Final Four

8 of 10

Goldman will announce on National Signing Day.

2. Arkansas Hosted a Star-Studded Official Trip Weekend

9 of 10

Arkansas recruiting coordinator Tim Horton did it "B.I.G." this past weekend, hosting a handful of top prospects. Names like Dalton Santos, Jordan Diamond and Trey Williams were in the house.

But the biggest name there was the nation's No. 1-rated player, WR Dorial Green-Beckham. DGB has been interested in the Hogs for months and will decide between them, Missouri, Oklahoma, Alabama and Texas on NSD.

1. Mario Edwards Down to a Final Two

10 of 10

Mario Edwards, the 5-star DE prospect and one of the top five players overall in the country, is down to a final two.

According to his father, Mario Sr., Edwards had a blast recently in Baton Rouge visiting LSU. Tyrann Mathieu was his host, and Mario Jr. loved it there.
