Serena Williams: Why It's Time for Diva to Hang Up the Racket

Brandon GalvinJan 23, 2012

One of the greatest to ever hold a tennis racket, Serena Williams, was ousted from the Australian Open 2012 tournament by Ekaterina Makarova (6-2, 6-3).

Are you kidding me!?

After that embarrassing exit, it's clearly time for Serena the Diva to bow out of tennis altogether. She made her heroic return last year after battling injury and illness for nearly 12 months, and she deserves all of the credit in the world for that.

Still, her time is up. She is no longer the focused and feared force of destruction on the court that she once was. At this point, she is nothing more than a sideshow attraction for her screaming, grunts, star power and outfits.

In fact, she is more concerned with her outfits than anything else. She needs to hang up her racket and put her tennis career to rest. She clearly doesn't have what it takes anymore to compete at the highest of levels and win a Grand Slam tournament.

It's not that the game is passing her by. It's not even that she doesn't have the abilities to win a Grand Slam. It's the mere fact that Serena herself refuses to let herself do it. If you're going to claim that you don't love the sport anymore, then you're clearly not in the right state of mind to ever win. You're not going to topple other competitors who bleed and sweat this sport. She put an even bigger target on her back when she made those comments and she's now facing the consequences of such remarks.

Serena's legacy is forever intact. She is easily one of the most dominant female competitors of any sport ever. Yet she is quickly embarrassing herself and her family by making such remarks and being forced to exit tournaments in humbling fashion (though it's difficult to say Serena has ever been humbled from a loss).

Serena is better off being in the fashion industry right now and could even do amazing as an analyst. Yet as far as being a competitor is concerned, Serena is unfortunately and much to my dismay, done.
