Arsenal Transfer Rumors: 10 Possible Destinations for Andrey Arshavin
It's angry time at Arsenal.
The Gunners lost 2-1 to Manchester United at home on Sunday, and the visitors' winning goal had a lot to do with a certain substitution by manager Arsene Wenger.
Now everyone's fed up. The fans are mad, Robin Van Persie is apparently mad and Wenger is mad that the fans and RVP are mad. Whew.
And Andrey Arshavin? Well, who knows. If he reacts to news stories the way he reacts to opposing attackers, he's probably shrugging his shoulders right about now.
Suffice it to say this: Arsenal fans want Arshavin and his defensive deficiencies gone. Some even want Wenger out. The latter is unlikely, but the former could very well happen—either this winter or in the summer.
With all that anger in mind, we've compiled a list of 10 possible destinations for Arshavin. We hope it serves as a catharsis for Arsenal fans everywhere.
Lazio
1 of 10Lazio emerged as a potential suitor for Arshavin last week. The Italians reportedly could have signed Arshavin in a cut-rate £6 million move.
The move now appears to be off, but after Sunday's debacle, nothing is impossible.
Zenit St. Petersburg
2 of 10Arshavin played for Zenit St. Petersburg in the Russian Premier League before he joined Arsenal in January 2009.
Last May, Arshavin reportedly trained with his old club, and last month Zenit expressed interest in bringing him back to the Baltic coast.
The potential deal reportedly hit a snag last week, when Arsenal stood firm on their £6 million asking price. Could the price be more flexible this week?
Chelsea
3 of 10Arshavin and Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich teamed up to help bring the 2018 FIFA World Cup to Russia. So, naturally, that means Arshavin is headed to Chelsea, right?
Schalke 04
4 of 10According to this article, Arsenal could swap Arshavin for Schalke's Peruvian midfielder/striker Jefferson Farfan.
Farfan has represented Peru 42 times.
Anzhi Makhachkala
5 of 10Anzhi Makhachkala have been linked with just about every big-name player in Europe. Arshavin is no exception.
The stories indicated that Anzhi might also want Arsenal defender Sébastien Squillaci. It's hard to see many Gooners being upset about that.
Juventus
7 of 10According to TalkSport, Arsene Wenger earlier this month ruled out the sale of Arshavin to Juventus.
That's a shame. Juventus were reportedly willing to pay £17 million.
Lokomotiv Moscow
8 of 10It's little more than a throw-away statement, but Lokomotiv Moscow were mentioned as a possible loan destination for Arshavin in this article.
Why not? Russia would seem to be the ideal destination for Arshavin.
Newcastle United
9 of 10Newcastle haven't been linked with Arshavin recently. But they were reportedly in the running for his signature three years ago when Arsenal signed him.
So would they take Arshavin now?
Hey, why not? Arsenal would probably throw in Marouane Chamakh for free.
Tottenham Hotspur
10 of 10Like Newcastle, Spurs haven't been linked with Arshavin in the last few years. But like Newcastle, they were reportedly interested a few years ago.
If Arshavin made the switch from Arsenal to Spurs, wouldn't it be the least acrimonious trans-North London transfer of all time?
