NBA Trade Rumors: Indiana Pacers Must Target Eric Gordon to Win a Title

Alex KayJan 22, 2012

Eric Gordon is an intriguing option for the Indiana Pacers.

The team needs to add a legitimate superstar to get over the hump, and there is no better option than the New Orleans Hornets shooting guard.

Indiana is a deep squad with skilled players at every position, but they cannot be considered a legitimate contender until they prove they can find success in the postseason.

Who would be better to build around for those purposes than one of the best young 2-guards in the game?

According to the staff over at NBA.com, the Hornets are reluctant to give Gordon an extension, something he is eligible for this season as a member of the 2008 draft class.

That makes him an interesting option for the Pacers, who would be willing to pay him and have great pieces to send back to the league-owned team in return.

According to Marc Stein of ESPN, the Pacers’ dream trade scenario involves returning the former Indiana Hoosier to his homeland.

He also admits that they would more than likely to give up Danny Granger in order to get him.

Which is fine.

The trade works perfectly for the Pacers and it gives them a great guard to pair with their towering forwards.

Paul George, who grew to 6’10” from 6’8” this summer, and the recently signed David West give the team enough depth in the frontcourt to overcome the loss of Granger.

The departure of Granger for such a huge upgrade at the 2 is well worth it if the league would be willing to part with Gordon and choose to build around Granger.

All of this hinges on the league making up their mind on how to handle the situation in New Orleans and deciding to take on some salary rather than shedding it.

Indiana has to be hoping that they are interested in taking on Granger and his $12 million salary and giving them Gordon in return.
