East-West Shrine Game 2012: Which Players Shined in the Shrine?

Michael DixonJun 7, 2018

The East-West Shrine game is a golden opportunity for small school players to show their value to the NFL. The 87th version of the game was no different.

Every one of these guys made themselves considerably more attractive to NFL scouts with Saturday's performance.

Lennon Creer, RB, Louisiana Tech

What does it mean?

Creer can play at a high level, and he proved it today. He had 838 yards rushing in fewer than 200 carries during the season, and that's not just because the Western Athletic Conference's defenses are poor. Creer proved that with his Saturday performance.

As a result, Creer showed that he is an NFL player. At 6'0, 222 pounds, Creer has the power to be a mashing, short yardage back in the NFL. But he has also ran the 40 at 4.46, which is good speed for a back of that size.

NFLdraftscout.com lists Creer as a seventh round pick at best. If he did nothing else with today's performance, Creer vaulted himself solidly into the last round. But one way or another, Creer showed today that he has a place in the NFL.

Bryan Anger, P, California

How he did?

Punts   Total Yards  Inside the 20

What does it mean?

Booting three kicks at a 60-yard average demands a place on this list. More importantly, it solidifies Anger as an NFL kicker. Special teams is a big part of the NFL, as it makes the differences in winning or losing the field position battle.

When you boot kicks at a 60-yard clip, you are going to be an instant factor.

According to NFLdraftscout.com, Anger will go somewhere in the fourth or fifth round. He is a punter, so it is hard to say that Anger will fly up the charts. But after today's performance, don't expect him to drop.

B.J. Coleman, QB, Tennessee-Chattanooga

How he did?

Completions   Attempts   Touchdowns   Interceptions

What does it mean?

Coleman is a good quarterback. He's projected as a fifth-round pick, and this kind of performance shows that Coleman is a guy worth drafting.

Completing two-thirds of your passes in a game like this shows that Coleman is at worst capable of being a good backup, and worth grooming. He won't be a starter next year but a team with an established veteran would do well to bring in Coleman.

He has the accuracy part of being a quarterback down. The rest can be taught in time.
