Michigan Football Recruiting: Why Jarrod Wilson Will Be Star of 2012 Class

Brian MaziqueJun 7, 2018

Ondre Pipkins and Kyle Kalis will get most of the publicity, but Jarrod Wilson will prove to be the best of Brady Hoke's recruits this year. Pipkins and Kalis are studs, and they deserve tons of attention, but Wilson is a special prospect at 6'2", 190 pounds and free safety is a position of need for the Wolverines.

Wilson has good size to play the safety in the Big Ten now, but his strength, age and height indicates he'll likely add about 15 pounds of muscle by his junior year in Ann Arbor. Wilson is currently designated by Rivals.com as a 4-star prospect, but that will change as his career progresses.

Wilson doesn't quite have the physical strength that the nations top safety prospect, Shaq Thompson has, but he certainly has some impressive bench and squat numbers. A 240-pound bench press and 350-pound squat for a 6'2" high school senior safety is impressive.

Those totals will grow and it proves he can add the strength to be a factor against the run-dominant teams in the Big Ten, like Wisconsin and Ohio State.

ESPN's analysis said this of Wilson:

"

"Has a lot of traits you look for at the position both physically and mentally. Possesses great size. Tall, well-built with good length and room to fill out. He flashes great range, particularly in deep coverage and good overall"

"

Wilson will have to try and make his impact on special teams as Marvin Robinson, Carvin Johnson and Josh Furman may have dibs on the rotation at FS for right now. The hold will be temporary, because provided he's healthy, Wilson will be the type of free safety presence the Wolverines haven't seen in a long time. One that polices the middle of the field and has enough range to impact the run game.
