Mayweather vs. Pacquiao: Bob Arum Needs to Suck It Up and Stop Being Selfish

Ryan RudnanskyJun 1, 2018

Floyd Mayweather Jr. took it upon himself to call Manny Pacquiao on Wednesday night for a potential superfight, but one man continues to be a road block: Pacquiao's promoter, Bob Arum.

According to Dan Rafael of ESPN, Mayweather called Pacquiao in the Philippines on Wednesday in hopes of arranging a fight for May 5 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

This is huge news. It shows that Mayweather, who some felt was ducking Pacquiao the last couple of years, truly wants to fight Pacquiao. He's been calling out Pacquiao's camp ever since his jail sentence for misdemeanor battery was postponed until June 1.

The only problem is, now someone in Pacquiao's camp appears to be delaying the fight.

In an interview in his office on Wednesday, Arum said that Pacquiao wouldn't be fighting Mayweather on May 5 because a grand, 38,000-seat facility had yet to be completed, according to SI.com. Arum said a May 5 date didn't make sense "economically," contending that a future date in a larger facility than the MGM Grand would net them more money.

Well, Arum needs to stop being so selfish. Of course a later date at a bigger arena would net them more money, but this has gone beyond money. This is about seeing the top two boxers in the world fight each other, something fans have been desperately clamoring for for years.

At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if everybody, including Pacquiao, is up for a fight besides Arum. Arum is becoming the problem child in this whole situation, and at some point he has to realize this is bigger than himself.

Pacquiao's camp will make boatloads of money if it agrees to this fight. It's not like they're going to go home empty-handed. And I doubt Arum will be begging on the streets if this fight takes place at the MGM Grand.

All signs point to Arum delaying the superfight we've all been waiting for.

It's up to you now, Bob Arum. The world is calling you out. Will you rise to the occasion?
