Ohio State Football Recruiting: Speedsters Urban Meyer Needs to Land

Eric BowmanJun 7, 2018

When the Ohio State Buckeyes hired Urban Meyer as head coach, many knew he was going to change the Big Ten because he so skilled at recruiting not just the top talent, but also the top speed players.

As the saying goes, speed kills. It's something the Big Ten doesn't have a whole lot of, which is why the hire of Meyer strikes fear around the conference.

By landing insanely fast recruits, Meyer will have the right players for his scheme in no time. Since Dan Herron and DeVier Posey are gone, the Buckeyes need a boost of speed to their offense.

In addition to that, adding top-end speed players to the defense will make Ohio State an all-around dangerous team quicker than anyone expected.

With that said, here are three talented athletes that would immediately help Meyer transform the Buckeyes around.

Stefon Diggs

Listed at 6'0", 185 pounds, Diggs is best suited for offense as well as the return game. He'll likely make an impact there first, but he also has great potential to be a force at running back or wide receiver.

Meyer could use Diggs like he did with Percy Harvin, which is scary to think about. Harvin did spectacular things for Florida under Meyer, and Diggs has the skills to be just as good should he choose the Buckeyes.

Since Meyer is revamping the offense, he needs speedy guys like Diggs. Meyer will play to Diggs' strengths, which will make him a big star in college football.

According to Derek Tyson of ESPN, Diggs will wait until after National Signing Day to decide between Ohio State, Notre Dame, Florida, Cal, Auburn, USC, Maryland and Virginia.

Diggs won't be easy to get, but because he has no current leader and the Buckeyes have Meyer as their coach, Ohio State has to like its chances to get this playmaker.

Davonte Neal

Listed at 5'10" and 175 pounds, Neal is very versatile in his game. He'll most likely end up on offense wherever he lands, but do expect him to first make an impact in the return game.

His size is his major downfall, but once he gets on a college workout routine he can definitely bulk up. What he lacks in size, though, Neal makes up for in speed.

Neal has a quick burst off the line, and that is what separates him from others in the 2012 recruiting class.

According to ESPN, Neal's top choices are Ohio State, Notre Dame, Miami, North Carolina, Arkansas and USC. Those are tough schools to compete with, but the good news is that he has already visited Ohio State and enjoyed his stay.

He too will wait until after National Signing Day, but there's no denying he is well worth the wait.

Joel Caleb

Listed at 6'2", 205 pounds, Caleb is a unique prospect with the ability to play on either side of the ball. He was a dual-threat quarterback in high school, but he projects to more of a wide receiver or even safety at the college level.

Since he has a rather diverse skill set, he instantly becomes a must-get target for the Buckeyes. According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Caleb's top choices are Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Georgia and Ohio State.

ESPN states that Caleb "seems destined to commit to West Virginia." However, with Meyer working his magic, there's no telling where this kid will end up at.

Caleb isn't as fast as Diggs or Neal, but he's still a burner on the football field. He has a great football IQ and can easily make defenders miss when on offense. On the defensive side of the ball, Caleb would be a physical hard hitter, which Ohio State would love to have.

Any of these three athletes would be great additions, and if the Buckeyes somehow got all of them, Meyer would once again be praised for his recruiting skills. What's more, Ohio State would be filled with speedsters that are sure to make a difference upon their arrival.
