Awesome Fantasy MMA Tag Teams
One of the best parts about being a mixed martial arts fan is creating fantasy bouts between our favorite fighters.
We are all used to making mock matchups, pitting champion against champion or a striker versus a grappler. But what about team-ups?
Most fans don't know that tag team MMA actually does exist despite the format being less than stellar. If the bigger organizations started using it, however, this ridiculous concept would become quite intriguing.
Here are 10 awesome fantasy tag team pairs that would be very interesting to see in real life.
10. Megumi Fujii and Meisha Tate
1 of 10Arguably two of female MMA's biggest stars, Megumi Fujii and Strikeforce champion Meisha Tate would be an insane pairing for a tag team bout.
Once ranked the top pound-for-pound women's fighter, Fujii is a grappling ace with a wide array of submissions in her arsenal. A black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and judo as well as being a master in sambo, Fujii is a force on the ground.
Fujii's dominance on the mats is a great pairing with Tate's powerful wrestling and underrated striking skills. Combined, fantasy opponents have no way to contend against these two dangerous female warriors.
9. Chael Sonnen and Muhammed Lawal
2 of 10It's hard to think of a better trash talking, tag team pair than teaming up the outspoken Uncle Chael with the always mouthy King Mo. Both fighters are powerful wrestlers that bring very different skills to the table.
Sonnen is the better wrestler who also has an underrated submission game that, when paired with Lawal's heavy hands, makes for a well-rounded team that would dominate opponents.
How hillarious would it be to see both Sonnen and Lawal riffing insults together in pre-fight interviews?
8. Demian Maia and Rousimar Palhares
3 of 10A jiu-jitsu dream team, middleweights Demian Maia and Rousimar Palhares would be an arm-breaking and leg-taking wrecking machine.
Both fighters are high level black belts with a wealth of experience to go off of. Maia is the more technically sound while Palhares is more explosive making for a perfect balance of strength and technique.
As both fighters continue to improve their striking, a team-up between two of Brazil's most decorated ground fighters would be a sight to see.
7. Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar
4 of 10Explosive.
That's the word that comes to mind when you think of UFC champions Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar. While most fans are dreaming of a potential superfight between these two champions, that excitement would be amplified if they ever got the chance to team-up.
With Aldo's Muay Thai and jiu-jitsu and Edgar's wrestling and boxing, this pair would roll over any lighterweight challengers.
6. Edson Barboza and Anthony Pettis
5 of 10Two of the most creative fighters in the UFC's lightweight division, Edson Barboza and Anthony Pettis know how to add flash to their fights.
With all their off the wall, spinning and jumping kicks, this pair would be a dream team that actually makes these flashy moves effective.
I can't even imagine the highlight reel that they would have after just one team-up.
5. Georges St. Pierre and Jon Fitch
6 of 10I'll admit, this pair would not be as exciting as the previous coupling, but teaming up UFC champion Georges St. Pierre and veteran welterweight Jon Fitch would make a team that knows how to win.
Both fighters have gotten their share of criticism for "boring" fights, often controlling their opponents on the mats to grind out decisions. This would be the likely game plan for this dream team, an understandable choice due to the amount of success they've had with it individually.
St. Pierre also has a great striking and submission arsenal that would come in handy if they ever faced a team that could neutralize their wrestling.
4. Lyoto Machida and Cung Le
7 of 10It's Ryu meets Marshall Law in this team-up that brings Street Fighter X Tekken to life.
Both Cung Le and Lyoto Machida are known for their traditional martial arts background that, when combined, would be an exciting spectacle of old school martial arts action.
Machida has great karate and jiu-jitsu skills that would complement Le's Sanshou and wrestling nicely.
All they need is a Mortal Kombat team to face. Finish him!
3. Brock Lesnar and Bobby Lashley
8 of 10As WWE alums, Brock Lesnar and Bobby Lashley are no strangers to the tag team format.
Pairing these two wrestling stars in an MMA setting would make for an intriguing tag team battle.
What I'd give to see the Brock Lock or the Dominator in action in the cage.
2. Nick Diaz and Nate Diaz
9 of 10Seeing as how they have already paired up to give Mayhem Miller a beat down at Strikeforce: Nashville, Stockton's own Nick and Nate Diaz already know how to fight as a team.
Having trained together their entire lives, Nick and Nate know each others moves and their fiery personalities would make for some heated battles.
I can guarantee that these fantasy fights would be filled with lots of flexing, middle fingers and just overall off-putting words and actions that would make for great MMA entertainment.
1. Jon Jones and Anderson Silva
10 of 10As the two top fighters in the world, having UFC champions Jon Jones and Anderson Silva team-up would be unfair to the competition, but boy would it be great to watch.
Silva is an excellent striker and a submission ace that perfectly pairs with Jones own brand of creativity and powerful wrestling.
Sending two guys to face them wouldn't be enough, you'd need an army in the cage to take out the current and future GOATs.
