Chauncey Billups Video: Watch Mr. Big Shot Drain Game-Winner Against Mavericks
Chauncey Billups proved that Chris Paul isn't the only difference-maker the Clippers added during the offseason. As Paul watched from the sidelines, in street clothes, nursing his tweaked hamstring, Billups stepped up to guide the Clippers to victory over the Dallas Mavericks at Staples Center.
The Mavericks can't wait to get out of Los Angeles. It was the second consecutive game they've been victimized by a buzzer-beater from a veteran point guard at the Staples Center.
On Monday night, Los Angeles Lakers guard Derek Fisher drained a cold-blooded three in the face of Dirk Nowitzki to secure a Lakers win. On Wednesday night, it was Billups' turn.
With the Clippers trailing by one point with 4.2 seconds remaining, the Clippers executed a beautiful inbounds play. Billups threw in to Blake Griffin, and the Clippers ran Caron Butler off a double-screen as a decoy. Griffin handed the ball right back to Billups, immediately setting a screen, and without hesitation Billups rose and bottomed the long three point to give the Clippers the lead, and the game.
It was a huge win, as they rebounded from an embarrassing blowout loss to the Utah Jazz the night before. Now, in the span of a week, they have defeated the Lakers, Miami Heat and Mavericks, all at home.
The Clippers are coming into their own, and at full strength they are a deadly team. Clutch shooters like Billups are one of the reasons why.
