NFL Coaching Carousel: The Latest Buzz, Speculation and Predictions

Tony SantorsaJun 7, 2018

This NFL offseason is going to be like no other, considering how many coaches have been fired and how the field is rather thin this year.

The St. Louis Rams arguably won the big prize as they were able to reel in the biggest name, Jeff Fisher. But there are still several other teams that remain without a head coach.

Let's take a look at the latest buzz and speculation for each vacant head coaching spot.

Jeff Fisher and the St. Louis Rams

1 of 6

About three two and a half weeks ago I released a report starting that Jeff Fisher was the prime candidate for the St. Louis Rams head coaching job—and I was correct, as Fisher agreed to a five year contract with St. Louis.

Fisher had many teams to sign with, most notably the Miami Dolphins—but there was one team that called about Fisher prior to even firing their head coach. Now what team was that? It the Indianapolis Colts, a source reports.

Fisher will have the next five years to start rebuilding the Rams and turn them into a playoff contender and I do see them having some success due to their young and up-coming quarterback, Sam Bradford

Miami Dolphins Head Coach Search Is Down to Three

2 of 6

Many believed that Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer was the favorite for the Miami Dolphins head coaching job, but reports are indicating that he didn't even make it to the second round.

According to one source, the Dolphins are now down to three candidates: Todd Bowles, Joe Philbin and Mike McCoy.

None of these guys are too appealing but I would have to say that Philbin is the best choice, as he's had huge success with Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers offense over the past few seasons.

Indianapolis Colts Still Searching

3 of 6

With news breaking yesterday that the Indianapolis Colts have fired Jim Caldwell, they now join many teams that are searching for a new head coach.

There have yet to be too many concrete reports on the Colts showing any interest with any available coaches, but one report is indicating that Indy may be interested in the CFL's Montreal Alouettes head coach Marc Trestman—off of the record, you have got to be kidding me? Really? The CFL? That's a joke.

There have also been a few reports saying that Steve Spagnuolo is on the Colts head coaching radar—which is a move that I would approve.

Lastly, another rumor that is flying around out that is that Indy's new general manager and former Philadelphia Eagle Ryan Grigson could be showing some interest in Philly's offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg.

If I were the Colts, I would go with Spags—he has head coaching experience and is a defensive-minded guy.

Oakland Raiders Still Searching

4 of 6

When the Oakland Raiders hired Reggie McKenzie to be their general manager, he made it very clear that he wants it his way as he fired Hue Jackson late last week.

With their head coaching job open, a report is stating that the Raiders are set to interview Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg and Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Mike Tice.

If I were the Raiders, I would be far more interested in Tice, as he's had some head coaching experience with the Minnesota Vikings.

Another report that is coming in is that McKenzie is interested in interviewing Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy and defensive coordinator Dennis Allen.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Eyeing Joe Philbin

5 of 6

There were early reports of Wade Phillips possibly going to interview for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers job—but reports came out that Phillips had canceled the interview.

As of right now, the hottest name for the Bucs job is Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin, according to ESPN

Philbin is probably the wisest decision considering that the Bucs have a young quarterback in Josh Freeman and considering what Philbin did with Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay, he could do possibly the same with Freeman.

Power Ranking the Available Head Coaching Jobs

6 of 6

If I were an available head coach, here is a ranking of which teams I would want to sign with:

1. Indianapolis Colts: Peyton Manning and possibly Andrew Luck? Sign me up.

2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Josh Freeman is a young quarterback that can be great if he's developed correctly and giving some weapons. Tampa Bay isn't that far off from a playoff berth.

3. Miami Dolphins: These team does have playmakers on both sides of the ball but is just lacking a quarterback. Definitely not a bad place to be.

4. Oakland Raiders: No, thanks. I would have no interest in this mess. The Raiders have salary cap issues and on top of that, they're stuck with Carson Palmer—who's below average—and as practically no draft picks.
