NBA Rumors: Ship Has Sailed for Boston Celtics, Time to Blow the Team Up

Matt ShetlerJun 7, 2018

When I last looked at the Boston Celtics, I looked at the possibility of breaking up their Big Three of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen.

Eventually, they are going to have to make some tough choices regarding the popular trio. However, after a five-game losing streak has left his team at 4-8, the time is now for Danny Ainge.

The ship has sailed for the Boston Celtics.

It's time to blow this team up and start over.

This Celtics, as they currently stand, have next to no chance to compete in the Eastern Conference. As a team with no chance to compete, the only smart thing to do is blow the team up.

If Ainge is smart, he can make the necessary moves to make the Celtics major players in free agency over the next couple of seasons.

The good news already is that both Allen and Garnett come off the books next season.

That doesn't mean that Ainge can't get something for both of them, though. Naturally, they wouldn't bring in the huge return they would have a couple of seasons ago, but they will still bring in something.

Pierce is the intriguing option.

If Ainge can move the two years and $32 million he has remaining on his deal, the Celtics will definitely have the cap room to quickly reload in the next couple of seasons.

The Celtics have to throw the towel in, wave the white flag and come to face the reality that this team will not compete for a championship.

After that, they can do one of two things.

They can sit back and watch the season crumble week-by-week or they can be very aggressive in blowing this thing up and get themselves in position to be a factor in the next couple of offseasons.
