Notre Dame Recruiting: Why Arik Armstead Must Follow Gunner Kiel to Irish

Jesse ReedJan 17, 2012

Gunner Kiel has already enrolled with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and Arik Armstead would be wise to follow in his footsteps and sign on the dotted line.

According to Whitney Blaine of Scouts.com, Armstead has decided to wait another couple of days to decide between the Auburn Tigers and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, giving hope to fans on both sides.

Previous reports had indicated that Armstead would make his intentions known by today, but the young defensive lineman has much on his mind these days. He has always wanted to play on the same team as his brother, who is also looking for a home these days after transferring out of Southern Cal.

Brian Kelly is transforming Notre Dame back into a powerhouse after a decade of mediocrity. Whether or not you like Kiel, he is the No. 1 recruit at the quarterback position for a reason. He, along with Kelly's strong all-around recruiting class, will make the Irish into contenders.

Armstead's inclusion into this class would be the cherry on top for Kelly and the Irish.

One of the biggest reasons Armstead needs to choose the Irish is that he'd be on the field playing meaningful snaps a heck of a lot sooner.

Another reason to join the Irish is that Armstead could continue to build upon the long tradition of excellent pro prospects to come out of Notre Dame. This list includes studs like Bryant Young, Mike Golic, Justin Tuck and Alan Page.

Although he has expressed the desire to play with his brother, as previously stated, the younger Armstead would be smart to go his own way and create a legend of his own at one of the most prestigious schools in NCAA history.
