WWE: Edge and the 10 Most Awesome and Insane Spots of His Career
Future WWE Hall of Famer Edge has given and taken some of the most memorable, insane and painful bumps in wrestling history.
Did crashing through tables and ladders contribute to Edge's early retirement? You bet it did, but how fun was the ride he took us on?
Edge's shortened career outshines many a man who wrestled far longer than him.
A part of his appeal has always been his willingness to take chances, to give everything he had, to steal every show he could. His spear finishing move is symbolic for who Edge was as a wrestler: forceful exhilarating and unpredictable.
Ironically, it was not some crazy move off a ladder that finally ended Edge's career, but a basic spear on Brodus Clay that provided the final blow.
Last Ride Through 2 Tables
1 of 10One Night Stand 2008, Edge vs. Undertaker, TLC match for World Heavyweight Championship
Had Undertaker actually broken all four tables when he fell off the ladder at the end of the match, then that spot would have made an appearance on this list as well.
Providing the image for the TLC 2009 poster, Edge takes a hellacious Last Ride through two stacked tables.
How many people thought Edge would have won that match even after that nasty bump?
One Man Con-Chair-to to Christian
2 of 10No Mercy 2001, Edge vs. Christian, Ladder match for Intercontinental Title
Over the years, Edge and Christian have both delivered a plethora of skull-cracking con-chair-tos. They popularized the move while dishing it out to other people.
Who would have thought that the sickest one of them all would be administered by Edge onto his former partner and friend?
The impact of steel and flesh echoes throughout the arena. To make it more intense, a lifeless Christian slides off the ladder onto the mat.
Spear Through Cell Wall
3 of 10SummerSlam 2008, Edge vs. Undertaker, Hell in a Cell
Just when you thought you'd seen every possible use of the cell's structure, Edge speared Undertaker through the cell wall as the crowd pops.
No Hell in a Cell match is ever going to live up to Mankind vs. Undertaker at the King of the Ring in terms of shock value, but this was a high-quality match, and the cage wall collapsing from the impact of the spear was an entertaining moment.
Chokeslammed Through a Table
4 of 10Smackdown 2011, Edge vs. Kane, Last Man Standing match for World Heavyweight Championship
In a match where Edge and Kane beat on each other pretty much everywhere in the arena with chairs and fists alike, this was the spot in the match that evoked the biggest reaction.
When the table collapses, a huge “Oh!” erupts from Matt Striker, Michael Cole and the entire crowd.
The fact that Edge still won that match made him look extremely resilient and gutsy.
Chokeslammed Through 2 Tables
5 of 10SummerSlam 2008, Edge vs. Undertaker, Hell in a Cell
While the aforementioned spear through the cage wall and Edge getting chokeslammed to Hell are more famous moments from this match, a less appreciated one stands out for me.
A chokeslam from the top turnbuckle would be vicious enough, but the impact seen here is jaw dropping.
Edge and the Undertaker created big moment after big moment that night.
Jeff Hardy and Edge Snap a Ladder in Half Part 1
6 of 10WrestleMania 23, Edge vs. Jeff Hardy, Money in the Bank Ladder match
The Money in the Bank match many consider to be the best of the bunch had some compelling moments, like Edge going on a spear rampage mid-match, but nothing can compare to what Hardy and Edge did.
Jeff Hardy made a name for himself by being willing to dive from precarious heights, so it wasn’t exactly shocking to see him climb to the top of that ladder.
Seeing the violent collision when he and Edge hit and that ladder breaks is equally sickening and thrilling.
Jeff Hardy and Edge Snap a Ladder in Half Part 2
7 of 10Extreme Rules 2009, Edge vs. Jeff Hardy, Ladder match for World Heavyweight Championship
These men made a name for themselves at the WrestleMania TLC matches and long after that, they decided that fans hadn’t seen enough daredevil acts from the two of them.
Many fans will remember this match for CM Punk cashing in his Money in the Bank contract and winning the world title, but neither Edge nor Hardy will soon forget the unforgiving nature of the steel ladder.
Edge got the worst of it, his hip thumping into the ladder and breaking it.
F-U off a Ladder
8 of 10Unforgiven 2006, Edge vs. John Cena, TLC match for WWE Championship
Considering that the match was in Edge’s home country of Canada and that it was a TLC match, a match that Edge popularized and perfected, Cena’s win shocked many fans.
The way it ended was just as shocking.
I’ve definitely criticized the FU/Attitude Adjustment for how ineffective it looks, but from this height and with Edge’s lower back crashing through two tables before slamming into the mat, the move looks devastating.
Foley on Fire
9 of 10WrestleMania 22, Edge vs. Mick Foley, Hardcore Match
When you can make everyone forget about the thumbtacks and barbed wire bats used earlier in a match, you know you’ve created an unforgettable moment.
The Hardcore Legend went up against one of the biggest risk takers in the industry, and fans knew they were in for a treat.
A spear through a table is thrilling enough, but to have fire exploding as two men pass through it is impossible to look away from.
Who better than Joey Styles to punctuate the moment with his classic, “Oh my God!”
Spear off Ladder
10 of 10WrestleMania 17, TLC match for Tag Team Championship
The first TLC match between the Hardys, the Dudley Boyz and Edge and Christian was shockingly topped in terms of excitement and dangerous bumps by TLC II.
The moment from that match that resides permanently in every wrestling fan’s brain is Edge spearing a lame duck Jeff Hardy in the air and the two men crashing down to the mat.
Even as it was happening, as Edge lie in wait like a predator, it didn’t seem possible that he'd actually go through with it. But as high as they were, both Hardy and Edge were willing to risk everything to mark their place in wrestling history.
And now that image of Edge spearing him and Hardy curling up like a crash test dummy will live on in highlight reels and the annals of the WWE.
