Caroline Wozniacki: Playful Arrogance Ruins Wozniacki's Australian Open Chances

Adam WellsJan 17, 2012

Caroline Wozniacki, the No. 1-ranked female tennis player in the world, is still searching for her first Grand Slam victory. The Australian Open has not been kind to her in the past, but she is full of optimism right now. She is so confident that she is telling her boyfriend Rory McIlroy she is the star of the relationship.

She was saying it in a playful way, not in a malicious, mean-spirited, I-deserve-the-headlines kind of way, but it was still interesting to hear it.

The Danish beauty, 21, says she teases the Irish ace that—while he might be a big name here in Ireland—she is the world No 1.

Talking about their six months together, she admitted: 'I definitely did not expect it to become that big, it was everywhere.

'I tease Rory, saying, 'That’s how it is when you go out with a superstar.'

'In Denmark, I’ve been in the public eye for a long time, and you just learn to live your life and not think too much about everything around.'

"

She should not be so cocky, especially with a Grand Slam tournament just beginning. Now, if she goes out and loses in the third round, like she did at least year's French Open, she has opened herself up to a world of jokes and criticism.

Fans have always thought that her No. 1 ranking was unwarranted considering her struggles in the big events, not just the Grand Slams.

McIlroy has the luxury of pointing to his U.S. Open trophy from last year and saying, "You may be the No. 1 player in the world, but I still have more hardware."

Wozniacki should have been humble and said that she is terrible in order to make sure that the tennis gods did not turn against her. She is now doomed to have another disappointing finish in a Grand Slam event.

At least she has a good sense of humor and doesn't take herself too seriously, unlike, say, Serena Williams, who believes that the sun rises and sets with everything that she does. Let's hope that when Wozniacki does win a Grand Slam tournament, it doesn't change who she is.
