Hue Jackson: Former Raiders Head Coach to Interview with St. Louis Rams

Ryan RudnanskyJan 16, 2012

After being ousted as head coach of the Oakland Raiders, Hue Jackson is reportedly being considered for the St. Louis Rams' offensive coordinator position.

Chris Mortensen of ESPN tweeted on Monday:

Michael Lombardi of NFL Network reported on Monday that former New York Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer would accept the job as Rams offensive coordinator once the contract details were hammered out, but apparently it's not set in stone.

What It Means

People had mixed feelings about Jackson getting fired by the Raiders.

On one hand, the former offensive coordinator was able to do some work with the Raiders offense behind superstar running back Darren McFadden, quarterback Carson Palmer and an emerging young receiving corps that included rookie Denarius Moore.

On the other hand, Jackson's defense appeared to get worse as the season went on.

Of course, none of this matters if he's going to be offensive coordinator of the Rams. Jackson has shown he is capable of boosting an offense during his stints with the Washington Redskins, Cincinnati Bengals (as a receivers coach) and Baltimore Ravens (mentoring quarterback Joe Flacco).

What's Next

It appears the Rams may be on the fence with Schottenheimer. In that case, they need to evaluate Jackson and determine if he's a better fit in St. Louis.

In my opinion, Jackson would be a better hire at the moment. There are questions about him as a head coach, but he's done a pretty good job working with offenses throughout the years, and Schottenheimer was ousted by the New York Jets because he simply didn't get the job done, fair or unfair.
