Can USC or Arizona State Steal Deontay Greenberry From Notre Dame?
With National Signing Day right around the corner, the recruiting process is really beginning to heat up. Over the next month or so, we'll be paying close attention to where some of these top prospects end up and what schools make a big splash by landing some of these top players.
One of the key players that we'll be keeping an eye on is wide receiver Deontay Greenberry. He's one of the top prospects at the position in this year's class, and at 6'3", 180 pounds, he's a big target for the quarterbacks to throw to. He's very strong, athletic and is one of those receivers that's still open even when he has a guy on him. You throw the ball up there, and he will find a way to come down with it.
Greenberry had offers from several schools, but gave his verbal commitment to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Although he was committed, he still wanted to explore more of his options just to make sure he was making the right decision.
"Yeah I’m going, I’m looking forward to it, Greenberry said about taking an official visit to USC. USC has been recruiting me for a while and they have a great program. They’re recruiting me for safety and receiver but more so receiver right now. I’m still committed to Notre Dame but I want to do these visits so I have something to compare it with. I like ASU too but the staff is gone so I’m not sure what’s going on there."
Greenberry visited with Arizona State back in October and visited USC in December. Although he is looking at other schools, you have to still consider Notre Dame the favorite for his services. It's the school he's obviously the most comfortable with, wide receiver Michael Floyd is leaving and it's the same school his cousin, Tee Shepard, committed to (Shepard is one of the nation's top safeties in this year's class).
And although Greenberry did visit more schools, he says that there is really nothing to worry about if you're an Irish fan.
"Me and Tee, ever since we were little, we’ve been talking about going to the same college, Greenberry said. He is very bright and will be leaving early, so I’ll be following him to Notre Dame.
"
The academic success there and the value of the degree, Greenberry said of what first grabbed his attention. And of course we’ll be able to go in there and play immediately.
They (Notre Dame coaches) were a little bit worried when we took the USC visit, Greenberry said. But there is nothing for them to worry about. They’re excited to get us out there.
I think when National Signing Day rolls around, Greenberry will commit to Notre Dame. The other two programs have a lot to offer, but one of the nation's top wide receiver prospects is in a great position to succeed at Notre Dame. He's with his cousin, he'll likely start right away and he's at one of the most prestigious programs in the country.
Of course, anything could happen with recruiting, but the Irish should remain the front-runner.
