NBA Trade Rumors: Why Golden State Warriors Are Foolish to Pursue Dwight Howard

Matt ShetlerJun 7, 2018

The Golden State Warriors have been very aggressive in their pursuit of Orlando center Dwight Howard, and they are very foolish for doing so.

Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski had reported that the Warriors were willing to gut their roster in an attempt at acquiring Howard for a rental until the end of the 2012 season. Point guard Stephen Curry is one of the names being thrown Orlando's way.

So far the Magic aren't listening, and that's a good thing for the Warriors.

So while I agree that they need a productive big man in the worst way, and while I give them credit for pursuing the best one in the game, what they appear willing to do doesn't make much sense at all.

You can't part with a young and vital part of the future in a guy like Curry, or anyone else for that matter, without the assurance that Howard will sign a long-term extension to remain in Golden State, and that's very unlikely to happen.

Howard remains committed to only signing extensions with New Jersey, Dallas or the Los Angeles Lakers, and unless they get their name included on that list, Golden State's willingness to rent Howard makes very little sense.

It would be one thing for a team willing to give up young pieces to rent Howard as the final piece in order to chase a championship.

It's something different all together for the Warriors to chase Howard.

What exactly are they taking a run at right now? Getting to the .500 mark and the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference isn't worth paying that steep of a price.

Eventually Mark Jackson and the Warriors will get that big man they need, but Howard isn't the guy and now isn't the time to pay the price to get him.
