Houston Marathon 2012: Experienced Men's Team Will Make Noise in London

Patrick ClarkeJun 7, 2018

The USA Olympic team got a whole lot better on Saturday following the finish of the 2012 Houston Marathon Olympic Trials. This year's team is destined to challenge the world's best in Europe.

Californians Meb Keflezighi and Ryan Hall finished one and two respectively in the men's race, while Tuczon, Ariz. resident Abdi Abdirahman came in third to snag the last Olympic qualifying spot.

The combined age of the three winners is 98, which signals one of the oldest teams in history, and also one of the most experienced Olympic squads in recent memory.

Keflezighi won an Olympic silver medal for the US back in 2004, right before he turned 30 years old. Seven years later he is closing in on 40 and ready to lead the men's team back to the top.

Keflezighi and his two new teammates all finished in under two hours and 10 minutes. All three finished within 39 seconds of each other as well proving there are no weak links on this year's team.

The youngest of the bunch, Hall, won the Olympic Trial back in 2008, proving his worth and experience heading onto the main stage this August.

Keflezighi is the oldest winner of the trial in history and the experience of these runners and some of their past accomplishments suggest the US Olympic men's team will be a force in London this summer at the 2012 Olympic Games.

The United States is not often known for its track and field domination overseas as much as its known for taking over sports and events like basketball and swimming, but that will all change soon.

This summer will mark the changing of the guard for US Olympic track and field as an experienced group of marathoners take their talents across the pond.
