Australian Open 2012 Predictions: Why Caroline Wozniacki Will Win

Donald WoodJan 14, 2012

At 21 years old, the world’s No. 1 female tennis player, Caroline Wozniacki, has yet to win a major tournament. She will achieve that goal this week at the 2012 Australian Open.

The young star won six titles last season, but couldn’t get past the semifinals in any of the majors. With the No. 1 spot’s enjoyment wearing off with no major wins, this is the time for Wozniacki to prove the doubters wrong and win the Australian Open.

Despite a thinner field that should make a run to her first major title easier than past events, a wrist injury suffered in a previous tournament has some fans questioning her ability to steal the show.

Caroline Wozniacki told Tennis X about her injury sustained last week and how it would affect her during this tournament:

"

It will be 100 percent. I feel confident that my wrist will be okay for Monday. Yeah, I mean, obviously also leading up to a tournament, playing in Sydney, of course when it happened, I really felt the sharp pain, I was a bit concerned. But now it feels good, so I’m okay.

"

Lucky for Caroline that her biggest threat, Serena Williams, has been dealing with an ankle injury of her own and looks to be entering the tournament at less than 100 percent. Any little bit helps when a tennis player is trying to get that first major victory out of the way.

It’s not just Williams who is ailing: stars like Maria Sharapova and Kim Clijsters are also coming into this tournament as wounded ducks.

There are still many tennis experts who don’t think Wozniacki has what it takes to win a major, but this is the week the world realizes why she is ranked No. 1.

The 2012 Australian Open will begin the Caroline Wozniacki era of women’s tennis.
