Tim Tebow: Is Broncos QB Using Attitude and Faith to Gain Endorsements?

Brian MaziqueJan 14, 2012

People will ridicule you whether you're Tim Tebow or Sam Hurd. Nobody is perfect, partially because no one would allow them to be.

Tim Tebow is prospering greatly from his enormous fame, and in his actions, he is doing little to curb that attention. But he also isn't doing anything different than he always has.

In a sense, he has taken a somewhat unpopular stance and made it not only OK, but profitable.

Recently, at least two companies reported to NFL.com that they have seen increased interest online from their associations with Tebow.

One reported a 500 percent increase in web traffic on their site.

Often, the road to righteous behavior is a lonely one. Could it be that Tebow appears a little too good to be true to his detractors? It seems nothing would satiate his critics more than a scandalous story about his past or present.

William C. Rhoden, a columnist I have a great deal of respect for, had this to say of Tim Tebow and other "sky pointers" as he called them: "If Tim Tebow thanked Jesus after throwing an interception, it would be more of a teachable moment."

While his video piece has some valid points, he uses Tebow as a springboard to mentor many professional football players who display some measure of spirituality on the field to celebrate successes.

Is this not a trait of nearly every man? When is the last time you thanked God for losing your job, or twisting your ankle? Why are we calling upon Tim Tebow or others to do something above and beyond?

Is Rhoden not using the hottest topic in sports now as a springboard for his point of view? It is capitalization. I wouldn't have clicked the link for the video had he not put Tebow's name in it the headline.

Would anyone be attacking Tebow if he were not raking in the dough from endorsements? If so, it wouldn't be nearly as widespread.

Tim Tebow has never placed himself above anyone. We have. The vicious nature of society to build for the purpose of later destruction is still perplexing to me.

I read a comment from someone, bordering on troll status on a YouTube video, but this quote is enough to get the gist of the theme.

Where do these expectations come from? It sounds like jealousy to me. Is that where the hate for Tebow comes from?

Recently, Kurt Warner, a great player in his time and also a devout christian, advised Tebow tone down the faith talk as well.

Really Kurt? I remember seeing Warner show his faith more than almost any player before him, yet he never gained the measure of fame Tebow has. Could It be even more irritating that Tebow hasn't really accomplished much?

Yet he is still the most polarizing figure in sports.

Is Warner jealous? He's human, he isn't exempt from the emotion. Warner had endorsements as well. Though most didn't come because of his image as a devout Christian. Warner profited more because of his rags-to-riches story that saw him go from grocery store bag boy to Super Bowl QB.

It was his story. The same as Tebow's faith, left-handedness and unconventional style is his drawing point.

Don't expect Tebow to have a critical or angry retort. In fact, that is the most impressive quality about him. Quotes like this one shows Tebow may not always have control over his passes, but he is always in control of his mouth.

This is in response to Brian Urlacher calling him a "great running back" after the Broncos defeated the Bears in Week 14: "Coming from a really good player, that means a lot."

At 24, Tebow says initially, what most people acknowledge they should have said in retrospect. That is commendable, yet it seems to further infuriate his haters.

There comes a time that we all must realize it's useless to try an appease people that carry dislike for you, with no real reason. They are way they want to be. Tebow shouldn't be ashamed of receiving endorsements for his fame.

Is his attitude and faith a gimmick? Not by my estimation, but I could be wrong. He has made good financially on simply being himself.

What could be better than that?
