Would Andruw Jones Solve the Yankees Centerfield Problem?
I am far from a Andruw Jones fan, but there has been recent rumors going around that the Yankees could go after him.
There has been a lot of complaints by Yankee fans about having Melky Cabrera or Brett Gardner starting in center field. I have no problem with it, and I wouldnโt mind seeing the two compete for the job in Spring Training. The Dodgers want to get rid of Jones as soon as possible and they reached a restructured deal that will most likely lead to his departure.
Andruw is still young at 32, but he has sure aged quickly. He has been absolutely horrible the last two seasons and he is out of shape. ย He hit .222 in โ07 and .158 in โ08. In 2006, Jones had one ofย the best seasons in his career, in which he finished 11th in the MVP voting. Not only that...he is a 10-time Gold Glover.
I would stay away from him anyway. The only thing that would make sense would be signing Andruw to a minor-league contract. If he can make a comeback then thatโs great, and if he canโt the Yankees donโt really lose anything from it.
