How the Sizzling Kobe Bryant Is Dominating on Offense

Kelly ScalettaJun 7, 2018

Kobe Bryant is playing at another level right now. He is absolutely dominating on offense. Since the horrible game against Denver it's like he's on a mission to prove he's still Kobe Bryant and he can still score almost at will.

Over his last six games Bryant has scored 36.7 points, 5.9 rebounds and 5.3 assists. Perhaps the stat that is overlooked in all of this is his field goal percentage, though: .503.

Yes, Bryant is ripping it up, but don't be too eager to discount that as "mere" high-volume shooting. Yes, he's shooting a lot—27.5 attempts per game—but 36.7 points on 27.5 attempts is pretty good.

The other aspect of his game is that he still gets to the line and makes his free throws. Bryant is taking 9.7 free throws a game and making 84.5 percent of them.

When you add in the 5.3 assists per game he is averaging as well, that's a lot of offense Bryant is generating. To be precise, he's been accounting for 47 of the Lakers' 96.7 points a game.

Over that same time frame the Lakers are also 5-1.

Yet all that talk about the team having a better chance to win seems to be getting weaker by the day. In fact, Bryant's raising the team field-goal percentage over the last six games, not lowering it. The team in general is just shooting .477, 26 points lower than Bryant's field-goal average.

One other thing worth mentioning is this: Kobe Bryant's field goal percentage on the season right now (.459) is the same as it was the year he won MVP. Why weren't there complaints about his field-goal percentage then?
