Power Ranking Jones' Potential Title Challengers

Jake MartinJun 1, 2018

Jon Jones has already been labeled unbeatable in his young MMA career, but there are five guys in the light heavyweight division that have something to say about that.

Last year, Jones became the champion of his division at the age of 23, and dominated past champions such as Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Lyoto Machida.

Now, Jones has sort of become the poster boy of the UFC, and he needs some competition. These are the five fighters that are in line to challenge Jones for his gold.

5. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira

1 of 5

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, also known as Lil Nog, is set to face Alexander Gustafsson when the UFC invades Sweden, and a win could get him a title shot.

Nogueira has had an incredible MMA career with stellar wins over Alistair Overeem and Dan Henderson in Pride, but he hasn’t been the same fighter in the UFC.

He dropped two fights in a row to Phil Davis and Ryan Bader, but his last TKO win against Tito Ortiz showed signs of Nogueira getting back on track.

Only time will tell if Nogueira is ready to face Jones, but a victory over Gustafsson would certainly make a case.

4. Alexander Gustafsson

2 of 5

Jon Jones isn’t the only 24-year-old ripping through the light heavyweight division.

Alexander Gustafsson has won four fights in a row since losing to Phil Davis, and he’s stopped every fight via TKO or rear-naked choke.

Gustafsson is a long, rangy fighter that has potential to land strikes on the elusive Jones. A victory over Nogueira in his homeland would be the statement Gustafsson needs to get that coveted shot at Jones.

3. Phil Davis

3 of 5

The guy that’s beaten both Gustafsson and Nogueira is fighting for his opportunity to face Jones for the championship later this month.

Phil Davis will get his shot at Rashad Evans, and should he defeat Evans, he’ll be worthy of a future title shot against Jones.

Jones's striking is leaps and bounds above Davis, but Davis’ wrestling skills could top the champ’s.

It’s his wrestling that’s seen him go 9-0 in his professional MMA career and 5-0 in the UFC. Jones had better be able to stop the takedown if he faces the young and talented Davis.

2. Dan Henderson

4 of 5

Dan Henderson is a veteran fighter that possesses knockout power in both hands to knockout Jones.

Henderson has the wrestling credentials to stop Jones' takedown and keep the fight standing, and should he catch Jones with a right or left hook, Jones could be lying unconscious on the mat.

But that’s if he can put his hands on him, and fans know that is no easy feat. Jones uses his reach and Muay Thai to keep fighters at bay, and that's why he's the best in the division.

If Henderson can catch Jones clean, he could be the only man to solve the puzzle of Jones.

1. Rashad Evans

5 of 5

If I had to put my money on one fighter to dethrone Jones, I would put my money on Rashad Evans.

Not only does he have a mental edge on Jones because he’s trained with him, but he has the skills to dethrone Jones. Evans's amazing wrestling skills and knockout power in both his hands and feet could spell danger for the champion.

Quite frankly, as unstoppable as Jones has looked against every opponent he’s faced, Evans could be the only guy that could upset Jones.

Will Evans be the guy to knock Jones off his pedestal?
