Liverpool Transfer News: Luc Castaignos Would Be Smart Low-Risk Move for Reds

Tim DanielsJan 11, 2012

Inter Milan striker Luc Castaignos is drawing interest from Liverpool, according to Duncan Castles of The National. The talented striker arrived to Internazionale from Feyenoord following last season and would be a cost-effective loan option for the Reds.

"

Liverpool have made an offer to Inter Milan to sign Luc Castaignos, their Dutch forward, as they seek cover for the suspended Luis Suarez. With the Uruguay forward serving an eight-match ban for racially abusing Patrice Evra, Liverpool are striving to increase their attacking options by moving for the 19-year-old forward on loan with a view to permanent move.

"

Liverpool was struggling to find consistency in the attacking third even before Suarez started serving his ban, so his absence has only increased the need for more options up front. It's an issue that will need to be resolved if the Reds plan on staying in the European chase.

They currently sit two points behind Arsenal for fifth place and three behind Chelsea for fourth. Both spots are clearly within reach, but they will begin to slip away if the team isn't able to generate more scoring chances in the season's second half.

Castaignos hasn't been featured much during his time with Inter. He has a ton of potential but it will never be realized if he's stuck on the bench, so he could benefit from a move to a team where there are more avenues to playing time.

It's unlikely the Nerazzurri are ready to give up on the Dutch international yet, so any deal would probably be strictly a loan move. That said, it's still an option the Reds should strongly consider even if it's not a long-term agreement.

The hope would be Castaignos could step right in and have an immediate impact. Liverpool's current forwards haven't lived up to expectations, so Kenny Dalglish would have no problem throwing the kid to the fire right away to see what he can do.

If he excels with the increased playing time and helps solidify the Reds' attack, Dalglish will come out looking like a genius. If Castaignos struggles, he can be returned to Inter at season's end and nobody will be able to blame the Liverpool boss for taking a chance.

Whether it's the 19-year-old Castaignos or a different striker, Liverpool can't allow the January transfer window to pass by without making any moves to upgrade its attack.
