Robert Griffin III Will Enter the 2012 NFL Draft
Heisman Trophy winner and record-breaking Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III has today indicated to his college coach that he will enter the 2012 NFL Draft to be held April 26-28 in New York City.
The mobile junior quarterback threw for 4,293 yards and 37 touchdowns in leading the Bears to a 10-3 season. He also added 644 yards and nine touchdowns rushing. In a bowl game performance highlighting all the assets he'll carry onto the next level, Griffin III was 24-for-33 for 295 yards passing, including a touchdown and 55 yards and a spectacular 24 yard-TD on the ground in a 67-56 win over the Washington Huskies in the Alamo Bowl.
With Matt Barkley and Landry Jones opting to return to USC and Oklahoma, respectively, RG3 seems poised to be the second quarterback selected in the draft. Where and to which team the Baylor QB will go is sure to be one of the preeminent story lines of the 2012 draft.
The Washington Redskins hold the sixth pick and, after their third consecutive losing season in which neither Rex Grossman or John Beck impressed under center, could decide on Griffin the III. The Miami Dolphins would certainly take a long look at RG3 at the No. 8 or 9 pick should he drop that far given their need at that position.
Griffin III promise lies in his ability to improvise outside of the pocket and extend plays. His dual threat methods are in the same vein as Cam Newton, Michael Vick and Tim Tebow. Concerns have been raised about his size and durability. Wherever he ends up playing on Sundays, that team would be wise to take advantage of his unique athletic ability and design an offensive scheme around his prodigious talents.
