2012 NFL Draft: Robert Griffin III Would Be Foolish to Return to Baylor

Timothy RappJun 7, 2018

Robert Griffin III isn't foolish for enjoying the college experience. But he would be foolish if he decided he enjoyed the college experience so much that he decided to return to Baylor for his senior season and wait on entering the NFL draft for another season.

He already has his bachelor's degree, after all, and he is scheduled to earn his masters in communication in May. Hell, the dude is engaged to be married—what college experience is really left for him?

Griffin's stock is about as high as it's ever going to be. He's the consensus No. 2 quarterback in this year's draft, and the absolute lowest he would drop would be to the Washington Redskins with the sixth pick.

And with several teams in need of a quarterback—and Matt Barkley and Landry Jones staying in school and entering next year's draft—the perfect storm has touched down for Griffin.

Nothing is ever certain in sports, and going back to college would be risky. Maybe he sustains a serious injury. Maybe Baylor struggles, RG3's play takes a step back and he drops down on draft boards below Barkley and Jones.

Remember in 2005, when most thought Matt Leinart would be the first-overall pick to the San Francisco 49ers if he declared for the draft?

Leinart went back to school and the 49ers drafted Alex Smith. Leinart then dropped in the following year's draft to the Arizona Cardinals with the 10th pick, and he ended up costing himself a guaranteed $10 million dollars.

Is one more season at Baylor really worth the risk, RG3? Is another knee injury like the one that ended your 2009 season really worth the risk, RG3? Can you really leave money on the table that will leave you financially secure for the rest of your life, RG3?

The wise answer to each of those questions is no. We'll see whether or not RG3 agrees.

Hit me up on the Twitter—it's the best way to spend the last year of existence.
