316 Yards Passing : The Miracle of Tim Tebow

Bruce TJun 6, 2018

Much is being made of this weekend's god-like performance of Tim Tebow. And why not? He passed for a biblical 316 yards with a 31.6 yard per pass average, matching closely the favorite Bible quotation at sporting events of John 3:16 (though 3.16 yards per pass might have been more on the mark). Clearly, God was watching.

So, how could I resist doing a little research to find out what other gods have passed this way before? Lazy as I am, I took only 15 minutes out of my day to scan the historical QB game logs and came up with a mere 18 other such performances.

Therefore, I hereby declare the following NFL quarterbacks to be gods as well: Matt Ryan (who did it earlier this year and last year as well), Ben Roethlisberger (and you folks thought he was the devil!), Philip Rivers, Fran Tarkenton, Dan Marino, Brett Favre, Joe Montana and Steve Young (despite playing their careers in heathen San Francisco, an extra special accomplishment), Ken Anderson, Troy Aikman, Joe Ferguson, Jim Everett, Matt Hasselbeck (conservative sister-in-law Elisabeth Hasselbeck will be happy to see he made the cut), Jim Kelly, Kurt Warner (well, of course), Daryle Lamonica (did he ever throw for under 300 yards?), Dan Fouts (see previous comment) and Kerry Collins.

Notably, as anyone would imagine, well-known devils Michael Vick and Joe Namath were not on the list.

Now, to be fair, this was just a brief scan of the past performances of some of the biggest names in the NFL passing game. There may be other anointed ones out there who escaped my research, so I invite others to complete the hunt. Many of us have long worshiped our athletic heroes. Let's be sure we're worshiping the right ones.
