2012 NFL Free Agents: Reggie Wayne and Free-Agent Stars on the Move

Donald WoodJan 9, 2012

With the NFL season almost over, the rumors for next season will start to come fast and furious over the next few months.

Big-name free agents will be on the market and several of the biggest names will be finding themselves donning the colors of a team unfamiliar.

All of the following free-agents-to-be will be on the move this offseason, breaking hearts in one city and fulfilling dreams in another.

Reggie Wayne

There will be an immense amount of turnover on the Indianapolis Colts roster this offseason, and that may reach as far as the eventual departure of Colts staple wide receiver Reggie Wayne.

While drafting Andrew Luck No. 1 and having Peyton Manning would almost certainly mean Wayne should stay in Indianapolis, the team won’t want to commit that much money to an aging receiver. Just ask Marvin Harrison.

With Wayne going under 1,000 yards this season for the first time since 2003, the leverage is in the hands of the Colts. There are teams that will take a risk on the receiver, though, and he will take the money and run.

They are obviously rebuilding in Indianapolis, so expect a draft pick or two to be used on a promising wide receiver prospect—a toy for Luck and Manning to play with.

Jermichael Finley

The Green Bay Packers have more weapons that most defenses can count, but they may be losing one of the biggest pieces this offseason when Jermichael Finley looks to get paid.

With his basketball height and wide receiver hands, Finley is the most promising young tight end in the league and could be the foundation of a team’s passing offense.

While Finley was held to solid, but not outstanding, numbers in Green Bay, he could be a top-10 receiver with the numbers of catches and yards he’d get on a team whose offense is based off tight end plays.

The best spot for Finley would be in St. Louis if Jeff Fisher takes over the head coaching spot. With Fisher allowing young star Sam Bradford to use Finley as his check-down, the duo could become the best in the NFL.

With the Chicago Bears locked in a stalemate with star running back Matt Forte, the end of the road looks closer than it appears. That may be a good thing for Forte, though.

The Chicago offensive line was just offensive this season, and there will be plenty of teams with real blockers up front that could turn Forte into a legend. Turn his 12 touchdowns this season into 20 with a better team.

A young team like the Cincinnati Bengals will be looking for a new running back when they let veteran Cedric Benson go via free agency. They also have more extra money than most teams as close to contention for a Super Bowl.

If Forte does walk away from the Bears, it will be the biggest blunder in Chicago’s history.
