Mavs, 76ers Rosters, Salary Cap, NBA Draft Picks After Reported Caleb Martin Trade

Adam WellsFeb 4, 2025

Two days after finalizing their deal to acquire Anthony Davis in a package for Luka Dončić, the Dallas Mavericks are back at it by adding Caleb Martin to their roster prior to the trade deadline.

Per ESPN's Shams Charania, the Mavs are sending Quentin Grimes and a 2025 second-round draft pick to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Martin.

Here are what the updated rosters and salary cap look like for both organizations.

Per ESPN's Bobby Marks, the trade saves the 76ers $6.7 million against the tax and drops them below the first tax apron.

The Mavs were able to get Davis to waive his 15 percent trade kicker (worth $5.9 million) in the deal, putting them $628,000 under the tax compared to $5.1 million over before the trade.

Given the new financial flexibility the Mavericks created, The Athletic's Christian Clark reported on Sunday that the "sense" was general manager Nico Harrison was looking to make additional moves.

This certainly helps solve part of the roster construction issue in Dallas after the trade. The Mavs had more guards than they could reasonably expect to give minutes to, with Grimes being good enough to bring them back another quality rotation player.

Head coach Jason Kidd will presumably go with a starting backcourt that has Kyrie Irving at point guard and Max Christie, who was also acquired from the Los Angeles Lakers, at shooting guard.

The rotation since Dončić suffered a calf injury on Christmas Day has featured Spencer Dinwiddie starting at the point, but he's having a rough season with a 40.5 field-goal percentage.

Martin, who hasn't played since Jan. 10 due to hip and groin injuries, might not start in Dallas because of Klay Thompson's presence. It wouldn't be a surprise if he is part of the closing lineup because of his defensive versatility. Thompson is not close to the same defender he was at his peak with the Golden State Warriors.

Harrison's justification for making the Dončić trade was because "defense wins championships." The addition of Martin should make the Mavs even better defensively.

The Sixers are essentially just getting salary relief by taking on Grimes' expiring contract. He can be a useful player in their rotation for the remainder of this season, but this is shaping up to be a lost year in Philadelphia because of all the injury issues the team is having with Joel Embiid, Paul George and Jared McCain.
