Kevin Durant Says Gary Payton Trash Talk Was 'All Love' After Viral NBA Videos

Adam WellsFeb 1, 2025

Kevin Durant was feeling good on Friday night while helping lead the Phoenix Suns to a 130-105 win over the Golden State Warriors at Chase Center, so much so that he decided to engage Hall of Famer Gary Payton Sr. in a bit of trash talk.

The exchange occurred during and after the third quarter when Durant spotted Payton in the stands.

Durant told reporters after the game it was "all love," and he has "major respect" for Payton, but he likes to engage players from past eras because they "tend to talk down on the mentality" of players in this current era.

To his credit, Payton didn't seem too bothered by anything Durant said.

"Just talking junk," Payton told ESPN's Jorge Sedano during the telecast when asked about his verbal back and forth with Durant.

Payton was at Chase Center to support his son, Gary Payton II, who started for the sixth time in Golden State's last seven games. The Glove was so renowned for his trash-talking skills in the NBA that there is now a docuseries in development that will put him in various scenarios with people around the country to engage them in trash talk.

Gary Payton II revealed last year that his father used to trash-talk him when he was a kid as a motivational tool.

Even though Durant was happy to jaw with Payton, the Warriors did a good job for most of the game keeping him in check. He finished with 19 points, snapping his streak of 23 consecutive games with at least 20 points.

The third quarter was when Durant played at his best, scoring nine points on 3-of-4 three-point shooting. It's probably not a coincidence he picked that time to engage with Payton.

Phoenix is starting to build some positive momentum leading up to the Feb. 6 trade deadline. Head coach Mike Budenholzer's team has won four of its last five games and has moved into eighth place in the Western Conference.
