Real Madrid Transfers: 6 Players Who Could Lift Mourinho To European Glory

Peter WebsterJan 8, 2012

Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid are currently top of the Spanish La Liga, 17 games into their season.

The Galacticos have amassed 43 points thus far, and currently sit ahead of rivals Barcelona.

For some, getting to the latter stages of the Champions League is just as important as winning La Liga, but Real have struggled to contend with other European clubs over the past half decade.

Not since 2004 have Real finished outside the top-two positions in La Liga, but their Champions League performances are less than impressive.

In the last seven seasons Real have only managed to get past the second round of the Champions League once, and that was last season when they managed to make the semifinals before losing out 3-1 on aggregate to rivals Barcelona.

Here we'll take a look at some players that Real Madrid could sign in order to make their Champions League dream a reality.

Robin Van Persie

1 of 7

Real Madrid have some fantastic forwards in Cristiano Ronaldo, Kareem Benzema and Gonzalo Higuain, but with the latter being consistently linked with a move away from the club, Mourinho could do worse than to look at Robin Van Persie of Arsenal.

An impressive 2011 put the Dutchman on everybody's radar, and with Van Persie stalling on a new contract with the Gunners, now might be a good time to test Arsene Wengers resolve.

Van Persie has Champions League experience to go with the majestic poise and balance he brings to a team.

Gareth Bale

2 of 7

Welshman Gareth Bale has been superb for Tottenham Hotspur over the past few seasons and his game seems to have developed in stature yet again this season with a new role, which means he's no longer restricted to wingplay.

Blessed with endless energy and rapid pace, Bale has become a defender's nightmare.

With Ronaldo and Bale on opposing flanks supplying the Real Madrid frontline, European glory should become a real possibility.

Bastian Schweinsteiger

Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger is considered to be one of the most accomplished midfielders in the modern game, but whether Bayern would ever consider selling him is another matter.

It was recently reported that Mourinho warned midfielder Mesut Ozil over what he deemed poor performances, and Schweinsteiger could be a possible replacement if the German did seek football elsewhere.

David Silva

4 of 7

Manchester City signed David Silva from Valencia and the Spaniard has gone on to prove himself as one of the best players in the Premier League.

Having played in La Liga for Valencia, Silva would require no bedding in period and may consider a move to the Madrid giants if the package were big enough.

Neymar

5 of 7

Neymar is a Brazilian international striker currently playing for Santos.

Neymar has been strongly linked with a move to Barcelona, but Santos have denied that an agreement has been reached with the Catalan club.

If Real Madrid were to steal a march on Neymar, he could provide some excellent firepower in Europe.

Daniel De Rossi

Daniele De Rossi has been strongly linked to Manchester City in the transfer window, but the midfielder may find the Santiago Bernabeu a more appealing destination.

Sky Sports have reported that Real Madrid have been credited with an interest in the Italian midfielder.

Real Madrid look a lot stronger defensively since Jose Mourinho has taken charge, and their European performances were much better last season.

With Real it's hard to identify what their weakness is when it comes to European competition, but any of the players listed here would likely walk into the first team should they sign for the club.

People may think that some of these signings are extremely unlikely to happen and that may be the case in reality, but the important thing is to remember the title of the article.

It's not about who they're likely to sign, rather who they should be looking to sign.

Let me know what areas you think Real Madrid need to strengthen in order to snatch the Champions League title this season.
