NFL Super Bowl 59 Referee Crew Announced Featuring Ron Torbert, Mike Morton

The NFL announced Tuesday the officiating crew for Super Bowl LIX at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on Feb. 9.

Ron Torbert, who worked Super Bowl LVI, will be the referee. Side judge Boris Cheek is the only other member of the crew with Super Bowl experience. Umpire Mike Morton did, however, win Super Bowl XXXIV with the St. Louis Rams.

Ben Austro of Football Zebras noted Morton is making history as the first person to win a Super Bowl and then officiate one. Austro also noted that Morton and down judge Max Causey are only in their third seasons, with Super Bowl refs typically having at least five years of experience.

Cheek is the most tenured referee in the league's history, per Football Zebras. He worked his 461st game in the Jacksonville Jaguars' 20-13 win over the Tennessee Titans in Week 17, moving him past Walt Coleman.

Torbert has worked as an NFL referee since 2010, climbing his way up from back judge to become a referee in 2014.

While there isn't any clear trend for how he has called games in the past, he has had 1.03 more penalties for 11.40 more yards on average this season, according to Pro Football Reference.
