CFB Coaches Show Support for Proposal to Create Single Transfer Portal Window

Paul KasabianJan 14, 2025

Division I FBS coaches voted Tuesday during the American Football Coaches Association convention to change the current transfer portal time window frame to just one single 10-day period, per ESPN's David Hale.

However, this vote is a recommendation and not a precursor to an actual change. This potential adjustment would have to go through the NCAA oversight committee and then the NCAA Division I council for the last approval before it can be enacted.

Currently, two Division I football transfer windows exist per year. The most recent one happened from Dec. 9-28, 2024. Football also has a spring one, and that's set for April 16-25, 2025.

If the proposal goes through, then it would be enacted beginning with the 2025-26 sports calendar year. The transfer window would be Jan. 2-12, 2026.

"We want to protect the season and the sanctity of that, but at the same time, you're trying to fit a competitive or an academic calendar to sync up, that's a challenge," SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee said.

"We're the ones on the ground and we know the problems and probably the best solutions, so to be all on the same page and come to a consensus on what the best path forward is, I think we did that."

Per the NCAA calendar, the next Division I FBS oversight committee meeting is set for Jan. 30, so it's certainly possible we could hear more on the matter by the end of the month.
