Pitt Ties Largest Comeback in DI WCBB History, Rallies from 32-Point Hole to Beat SMU

Timothy RappJan 12, 2025

The Pittsburgh women's basketball team made history in stunning fashion on Sunday, overcoming a 32-point deficit against SMU before ultimately winning, 72-59.

The Mustangs were up 46-14 with just 1:37 remaining in the second quarter. But Pitt came storming back, outscoring SMU 28-0 in the third quarter and 54-10 in the second half. It was the largest comeback win in regulation in NCAA Division I women's basketball history. Texas State overcame a 32-point deficit as well in 2006 but required overtime to finish off the win.

"[Head coach Tory] Verdi just said, I don't have any magic words for you guys," Panthers guard Mikayla Johnson said on the local broadcast after the win (h/t Sabreena Merchant of The Athletic). "You guys have to want this more than them. We've worked so hard over these past two weeks, and we've had a lot of come to heart moments with each other, realizing that we just have to fall in love with the process and just continue to chip away each day."

Johnson led the way for the Panthers with 22 points and six rebounds, while Khadija Faye added a 21-point, 12-rebound double-double. She also had six blocks.
