NFL News: Kliff Kingsbury HC Interviews Reportedly Requested by Bears, Saints

Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury is reportedly on the radar of multiple NFL teams looking for a head coach.

NFL insider Josina Anderson reported Wednesday that the Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints have requested to interview Kingsbury.

This comes after Anderson reported that "at least four teams have expressed interest in talking with" Kingsbury during the ongoing coaching cycle. However, Anderson also noted "some league sources are trying to fully ascertain how much Kingsbury really wants to be a head coach this cycle with more time to reflect, given his current circumstances in Washington."

It would be understandable if Kingsbury wanted to stay in Washington.

After all, his time as the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals was inconsistent at best, and the future looks quite bright for the Commanders. The NFC East team selected Jayden Daniels with the No. 2 overall pick of the 2024 NFL draft, and all the rookie quarterback did was lead the team to the playoffs with a 12-5 record.

Daniels completed 69 percent of his passes for 3,568 yards, 25 touchdowns and nine interceptions while adding 891 yards and six scores on the ground as a runner.

He is well on his way to winning the Offensive Rookie of the Year, and maintaining some continuity with Kingsbury as the offensive coordinator moving forward would also set the stage for even more success in the future.

Still, Washington's success surely caught the eye of other teams around the league that may be interested in seeing whether Kingsbury wants to try head coaching for a second time.

He led the Cardinals during four seasons from 2019 through 2022 and went 28-37-1. While that stretch included an 11-6 record and playoff appearance during the 2021 campaign, Arizona fired him after a 4-13 effort in 2022.

Kinsbury spent the next year as an offensive analyst for USC during the 2023 campaign, which was notable because Caleb Williams was the Trojans quarterback. Williams showed enough to be the No. 1 overall pick of the 2024 NFL draft and just so happens to be the signal-caller of the Chicago Bears team that is looking for a head coach.

That is an obvious connection in place, and Kingsbury has already been linked to the Chicago job alongside other candidates such as Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson.

For now, though, he is surely focused on Washington's upcoming playoff game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers even as his name is being floated as a possible head-coaching candidate for teams with vacancies.
