Stephen Curry Talks Warriors' Struggles amid 16-16 Record: 'We're Very Mid Right Now'

Timothy RappDec 31, 2024

After a 12-3 start to the 2024-25 NBA season, the Golden State Warriors have lost 13 of their past 17 games, dropping them to 16-16.

And Stephen Curry isn't happy about it.

"Like the kids say, we're very mid right now. Just very average," he told reporters Tuesday. "I think we understand that better days can be ahead. We're not in that big of a hole in the Western Conference, if you look at the standings. Go on a five- or six-game run—to us that sounds like a lot—but it's the numbers, you can make up a lot of ground pretty quickly. Tough task, but that fine line between losing hope and confidence and understanding that with one good week you're kinda back in it, that's where we are."

Curry isn't wrong. The Warriors are currently 10th in the Western Conference and would be the last team to reach the Play-In Tournament, but are just 2.5 games back of the Denver Nuggets in sixth place. A major win streak would have the Dubs right back in the mix.

Of course, talking about going on a win streak and actually doing it are two completely different things.

Curry and Denis Schröder getting on the same page will help. In six games as the starting backcourt, the duo have a minus-13.7 net rating across 99 minutes, per NBA.com, and the Warriors are 2-4.

"The numbers obviously haven't been great," Curry told reporters of his pairing with Schröder. "The feel of him with the ball in his hands, me playing off him, there's been some good spurts. That Phoenix game was kind of indicative of that. But we've had more games where we've been struggling a little bit."

The good news for the Warriors is that the team will be home for another four games against the Philadelphia 76ers, Memphis Grizzlies, Sacramento Kings and Miami Heat. It's a chance to turn things around.

"It's frustrating as you're losing games for all different types of reasons," Curry told reporters. "But as the calendar flips into the new year and this small home stand that we're on... it's literally right there to turn the corner. To having a positive momentum or something that you can kind of hold on to as an identity of how we win basketball games."
